shifter stuck in park

well ive read about it in other threads and it happend to me. My console shifter on my 04 fx4 wont go out of park unless i hit the white release button next to the shifter and im gettin pretty tired of doing that. Has anybody out there found a hard fix for this problem?? Or does anybody know the spacific troubleshooting steps to use when trying to find out whats wrong?? I would apreciate all advice. Thanks

I could be wrong but doesn't it mean one of your brake lights are burnt out? Maybe check them (including the high mount 3rd brake light).

It is definitely tied into the/a brake pedal switch somehow, and it's probalby the same one that actuates your tail lights.

Like Matt said....Check your tail lights...if one is burnt out the park shift interlock switch wont let it shift....other than that...is it still under warranty? If so have them take a look.

I will be a p'off person if I get a call from the wife and she says she is stuck out in town because the truck won't shift out of park...especially if it's something stupid like a brakelight burnt out.

is this true?

Actually the brake lights and shift lock are on separate circuits going thru the brake switch. There are 6 pins to the boo switch and two power circuits. The brake lights are illuminated thru pin 2 on the light green wire and powered thru pin 1 light green and red from fuse 2.02 at the interior fuse box.
The shift lock actuator is activated thru pin 6 pink and light green and powered by pin 5 light blue and pink thru fuse 2.14.
So at pin 1 at the floor shifter module you should get 12 volts with the brakes applied and key on and you should also have 12 volts to pin 2 with key on from fuse 2.15. Pin 6 provides ground.

BTW when I say 12v I am implying battery voltage, what ever that might be for your battery condition and loads with key on.

well all checks passed. brake lights worked and the brakelight switch works and im getting power to the brake park interlock solinoid. guess that means the solinoid is bad. man i hate that and the part at the dealer cost 220.00. for the mean time i wedged somthing in there to keep the button pressed so i dont have to take off that panel everytime i want to sift out of park. but to make things worse, the spring that is under the shift handle that keeps the shift rod down, well i broke it. dumb *** me . Thanks everybody for your input. It all helped in my quest to solve this stupid problem.

Shifter stuck in park.

We had the same problem with our 97 f-150! All it was were a few fuses in the dash! I'm glad I looked here before tearing the darn thing apart!!! It took a total of an hour to figure and fix the problem. Ford Forum Rules!
