Ha! I have seen a number of tow trucks and dumps with mangled frames over the years. Easy to do on those types of trucks if you don't know what you are doing. I also remember the GM 3500HD cab and chassis models from '91 to '94 or so have some issues with bending right behind the cab, particularly if they were long wheelbase models. They came out with a reinforcement plate that cured the problem.

 

Has anyone seen the 2011 GM HD chassis yet? I have not, but I heard from someone who has the other day. He said it is without a doubt the strongest chassis ever put under a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup. Front suspension looks like it came off a medium duty commercial truck. I am interesting in seeing it.

 

There were pictures of it a while ago on all the car sites. The front suspension looks like a typical double wishbone set up. Like something from a car. Nothing screams beefy about it at all

 

Wait until you see it in person. Doesn't look like it came off any car that I have ever seen.

 

Here is a picture: It looks slightly beefier then the outgoing year, but still not nearly as strong as a solid front axle.

Those pictures really don't do GM's new front suspension justice. That lower control arm is a massive casting, you can only see the top of the front section of it in the picture. It's very deep too. Lower ball joint is larger and it has zerk fittings on it (hear that, Ford?). Capacity is up to 6000 lbs., same as the Super Duty. We'll have to see how it holds up. Frame rail ground clearance is better than the 2010 GM HD's, but it is still less than the Super Duty.

 

Looks like it still uses the tiny little tie rods, which were the only things on them that like to fail.

 

I agree. The tie rods and the rest of the steering linkage is supposed to be 'beefed up', but it doesn't look much stronger than the current model.

 

I have to give Ford credit for the best frame in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. I also like the full floating solid front axle with locking hubs. Dodge has a solid axle, but its a semifloater. However, I like the Dodge quad-link front suspension setup, and the AAM 11.5" rear axle on Dodge/GM diesel trucks. I have a '05 F-250 4x4 and bought a new '09 Dodge 2500 4x4 back in jan. I like both trucks, but they both have pros/cons.

 

I would call the Dodge 9.25" front axle full floating. It doesn't have locking hubs (iirc) but the spindles and bearings are a one piece unit that bolts into the flange that the knuckles hold. You can take the axle shaft out and it will still function just fine. That would not be true with a semi floater.

 

So what you think guys now about new 2011 Superduty,still it be a king in frame/suspension/toughness compared to all new Chevy Silverado HD?

 

I think Ford might have a little catching up to do. I have been told that in addition to the 2011 GM HD's frame being fully boxed, it is made from 60,000 psi steel. That will make for a very stiff and strong chassis. For comparison, the Super Duty C-channel frame is made from 36,000 psi steel. GM has also upgraded the front suspension on the 2011 HD's so now it has the same maximum capacity as the Super Duty (6,000 lbs.). The 2009 GM HD front suspension capacity was only 4,500 lbs.. The front differential, CV joints, and drive shafts are also much stronger than last year. I think the Super Duty will still have an advantage in front ground clearance with its SFA, but I don't think it is any stronger. It will be interesting to see how Ford will match the new GM HD's in the next generation Super Duty. I believe the next GM HD (due in 2013) will use the new 2011 chassis and suspension.
