If you don't mind me asking, how many miles on the motor? How many miles were on it when you got it? I see you have gauges, any chips or tuners? Just curious since we don't hear to many of these stories.
Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Looks like a complete running engine is around $7500. Have you checked the wrecking yards to see if there are any deals? Are you planning on doing the rebuild yourself?

It's not dead 'till it's dead.
I would get a second opinion, and not from a stealership. Any filings in the oil?
Just in case I saw a rebuilt long block on ebay for IIRC under $4500 delievered, I typed in 7.3 in their search engine.

I would highly recommend another opinion on the engine condition as well. I had a Chevy dealer try to snooker me into a $8000 new engine for my '96 Suburban.
What happened:
- heater valve failure on long road trip
- extensive overheat in engine
They said:
- $8000 new engine was MANDATORY - could not be repaired due to...
oil/water intermix in engine
massive head cracks on both heads
damage was so bad they did not even need to send to machine shop for detailed inspection
Reality Check with a non-dealer shop:
- cracks were so minor they could not be found until the heads were magnafluxed
- weld repairs in the aluminum heads would work fine due to minor condition of cracks
- repairs total $1800, including all machine work to re-surface the heads after welding
- the dealer had never pulled to oil pan to check for oil/water intermix because the bolts were all still dirty and untouched!
Go to a reliable didesel shop and let another voice ring out... it may just end up sounding like a song instead of a dealer's death wail.

A few years back i had the dealer where i bought mine keep sending me mailings because they said they had buyers for the 7.3 pickups. Two years later, The dealers wanted them bad, even offering very high tradeins values. Mine was the last of the 7.3, then 6.0 where selling on the same lot. 6.0S gave them such a headake. Since i didn't give mine up along with other 7.3 owners now there(dealers) supposibly finding huge problems with some 7.3s only to tell the nieve customer that the truck is wasted, when in fact, the truck might need some minor internal work at the most. My father in law told me all about this b**ls**t because his dealer friend told him this. Moral of story= to take care off those unhappy 6.0 people, bussiness,s that bought fleets. What do you all think of that?
