Engine and tranny rebuild for 1985 E150 5.8

How much should I expect to pay for a full engine rebuild for my 85 E150 with the 351 windsor? Heads and bottom end too. What about a tranny rebuild? I jut want to know if it will be worth spending the money or if it would be wiser to just get another one. The van is in good shape, is clean and nice looking. How long do rebuilds usually run?

A rebuild or reman exchange engine will likely to run $2500 to $3500, installed.

A transmission rebuild (on an '85 which is likely an AOD) in the range of $1000~$1500.

I would recommend buying a newer van. Right now, full size vans are distressed merchandise for most dealers so they can be had cheap. A friend recently bough a '99 5.4 E150 conversion van, in excellent condition, for under $2000. All it really needed was to be cleaned up, tuned up and a set of tires.

For '85 the AOD was only advertized on 4.9 (I6) & 5.0 (302) motors. The "351" (5.8) came w/"SelectShift automatic" (C6). I'd presume shredder knows if he's got a 3 or 4 speed.

About 6 years ago my AOD was totally rebuilt locally for $1250 w/ 12 month warranty. It lost OD 13 months later. I bought a reman from FORD for $1500 w/3 yr/36K warranty & paid to have it installed.

This is a Throw Away Society. You're really bucking the system trying to keep a 23 YO vehicle on the road. IMO "worth" may have a different meaning than "value". Sentiment attachments may make it "worth" it. However economically its not a good "value". Saying its in "good shape" isn't much of an endorsement.

I just agonized over a nice '93 Chateau, but couldn't sacrifice my preference for sliding side door. Bet it would go for $1500.

Yeah, its a buyers market for full size vans. For what it would cost to r&r engine and tranny you could buy two newer nice vans and have money left.

I'm in that situation with my 92 E-350 Diesel w 304000 miles. Every time it starts I say "Thank You Lord." Saw a really nice 94 E-350 sell this week for $1200.00. Just with the high cost of feed, fuel, and fertilizer on this farm this year.....no money left for anything else. This may be my last year in this career.
