ford 460 D9TE-AB
So i just bought a 460 block # D9TE-AB
Head Castings #D3VE-A2A
intake manifold casting #D6VE-9425-A3A
Im not quite sure what year it is i think its a 79 it would be great if someone could help me with that.
I am looking to rebuild this engine.
i was wondering if anyone knew the availability of parts for this engine and good places to purchase them from
Thank you

D1VE-6015-AB, AB1, AB2 = 1971 mid year 1979 (1971/74 429 ~ 1971/79 460) / This engine does not use a weighted spacer behind the harmonic balancer.
D9TE-6015-AB = midyear 1979 thru 1987 460 / This engine uses a weighted spacer behind the harmonc balancer.
The flexplates & harmonic balancers are specific to the two casting numbers.

65HTgalaxie first and for most welcome to FTE.
Next Bill's info is always good but sometimes he gets a little carried away with to much info lol (no offense Bill) but to answer your question the casting numbers you posted indicate somewhere between 79 -86 for the most part. The block casting number you listed is for as Bill stated midyear 1979 and on (they used that block casting number until 97 when they stopped making the 460s). So what you have is an externally balance engine, most likely a 460 (they used the same block and heads on the industrial 429s built after 79 also but was only in medium duty trucks and industrial applications like pump motors and big gen sets)
As to availability of parts, you have a huge choice on anything you want to do with that motor from mild to wild, that block is what I prefer for strokers due to the cylinders being approx 3/16th" longer on the bottom, and even in 2 bolt configuration will handle more hp then 99% of the population needs or will even build. Case in point I am running a 528 using a D9TE block with factory 2 bolt caps at over 900hp NA.
Just let us know what you want to do and we can surely help ya out
Now I do have to correct Bill on one point, first off they are NOT balancers they are harmonic Dampeners. secondly they use the same one on both internal and external balanced engines it's the spacer behind them that is different (yes you MAY have a different part number but the actual dampener is the same and all of them are neutral balance it's the spacer that makes the external inbalance not the dampener, after market doesn't use different ones) example of this for you is ford motorsports they list M-6316-A460 for 72-97 same part number same dampener from ford for both internal and external engines.

NO OFFENSE TAKEN.

429/460: PARTS CATALOG CALLS THEM DAMPERS, TOO.
BUT ALSO CALLS THEM BALANCERS FOR OTHER MODELS.

Too much info? I dunno about you, but if I was junkyard hunting for a damper, I'd like to know what fits what.

and like I said your book shows a bunch of part numbers but what you don't seem to realize is that if you check Hollander Interchange you find hey whats this they ALL interchange with each other, and whats this? Most other dampener companies INCLUDING FORD use the same part number (read above post that IS a valid ford motorsport part number) what you don't seem to be able to grasp is PARTS BOOKS ARE WRONG A LOT OF TIME, OR ARE MISLEADING. remember your books say there is only ONE oil pump used for either front or rear sump oil pans but you were proven WRONG about that. Parts books are great and have a lot of great info but they are not gospel, this is something you need to come to terms with. I went through this I don't know how many times when I worked at a dealership, parts guy would insist the book was right but when I had the CORRECT part in my hand it wouldn't look anything like what the part bood said. 98% you have great info, but the parts books are written by people and they are NOT mechanics they are people that read books, and frankly they make a lot of mistakes.
Edit to add, YES the part numbers used throughout the years were different and on some of the early ones they are different also because of either the way the pulley bolts on etc but NON of the ford 429/460 dampeners have the inbalance in them, they are ALL neutral balance. The early ones obviously because the engines were internal balance but the later ones because they used a hatched weighted spacer to provide that external balance.

Bill I just did a google search on D4VZ-6316-A part number and the funny thing is there was only 3 hits and they are all in YOUR posts, I called my local ford dealer and he says that part number doesn't exist (say may be a discontinued or superseded part number but shows nothing for it) and says ford doesn't give a part number EXCEPT the motorsport number for the early engines.

If you wants specs there is Alldata or Mitchell online or a Chiltons or if you like Motors manuals get one of those. I suggest a chiltons or Motors grouping manual that includes the year you have and entails more than just specs. There are a few books out there that are on this engine but I have bought and found errors here n there, but nothins perfect. Shop around online or at Barnes & Nobel. This site will be wealthy with knowledge also.

What do you want to do? What kind of power are you looking for?
I will sugest that you stay with the D3 heads. With machining I have read that they can handle a good amount of power. They are the same heads I am running on my 460, and hoping for 400 hp.
Next best thing is to pick up a set of D0VE heads.
