6 Volt Gear-Reduction Starter
You might consider a 6v gear-reduction starter if the starter is the only problem. They draw a ton less current and are just plain a better idea. They throw out to the flywheel from the front of the flywheel, not the back, so they don't ever hang up.
It may also help on your stock starter to have the armature turned .050" smaller. The armatures tend to scrape on the field windings, which really slows them down. Bad (sloppy) bushings on the armature will make this worse. Before you abandon 6v, try some of the old tricks!

Also, does anybody have or know of any 6 volt radios for sale that would fit into a 1950 Ford F-1 pickup truck?

6volt systems pre-date me a bit so I'm not familiar with the tricks. That 2 volt charging difference didn't sound right at all, though.
I wonder if the generator could be made to charge at 8v with a regulator adjustment? But then again, it would need about 9.5 to properly charge, right? That's quite a jump.
Maybe a 12V generator with the reg. dialed down to 9.5v? But then, the bulb/accessory life would be even shorter than with just the 8v battery.
Well, maybe then, add a dropping resistor to the accessory feed circuit. That might be a pretty big (wattage) resistor, 2.5v at 15A is 37.5 watts. (I don't know what the total current draw for a 6v truck would be).
Hmm, the more I think about this, the more there is to think about.
Maybe getting the 6v system up to 100% isn't such a bad idea. That gear reduction starter sure sounds like step in a good direction, I've never seen one in 6v form.
OT- Sanford, did you ever see anyone tap a 12v battery at 8v for a tractor? I have a neighbor, now 95-yo, who did that on his 2 JDs for as long as I can remember. He'd buy "good" used batteries at the junk yard for $2-5, tap them at 8v for the starter, and tap them again at 6v for the charge line! He's a "frugal" fellow for sure, God bless him.

the regulator needs to be reset to charge the 8V battery, with the standard setting it will charge the battery to about 7 1/2 volts which is a little better than the normal 6 volts
