It was dark ad raining last night - I am sitting at my computer drawing stuff and my wife walks in and states:- "your daughter is outside in the rain in her underwear- and I blame you" -- Just sitting there minding my own business and wham I'm in trouble--- I mean I may have walked outside in my undies a time or two to get something from the car- or garage- but I'm a daddy-- its ok for daddy right?
A guy I used to know was sitting at a restaurant by himself. He noticed that there was an attractive lady sitting by the window by herself. He finished his meal and approached her. He said to her "If you will give me the honor of letting me buy your dinner tonight, I will return tomorrow and buy your lunch as well." She smiled and agreed. He then paid and left.
The next day he arrived later than he expected and peeked in the window to see if she had actually shown up. He was excited to see that she had, because in his mind he was thinking that this was a way he would get to see her again, and maybe they could strike up a conversation. First thing he noticed was that she was by herself, but she had multiple plates at the table. His thoughts were that since he had offered to pay, that she decided to order way too much food,(probably the most expensive food on the menu, and way more than she could eat,) so he drew the conclusion that she had decided she would take advantage of his kindness. It also crossed his mind that she had brought someone else, (who may be in the restroom) with her and expected him to pay for both people's meals, and that she had just taken advantage of his good nature before. He had convinced himself that this was the case, so he slipped out before she saw him, in his mind leaving her with what he figured would be an expensive bill.
A few days later, the guy visited the restaurant again. The waiter had recognized him from the first night, and had noticed the peculiar approach to the attractive lady by the window, then the fact that he had paid for a lady's food after saying just a few words to her. The waiter was also on duty the next day and saw the lady come in bringing a few bags with her.
It turns out that the lady by the window was a baker and had freshly baked him a bunch of different things that she wanted the guy to taste, and eat, to show appreciation for him buying her dinner the night before. She had forgotten to bring plates, so asked the restaraunt to provide plates, to which they agreed. This is why she had so much food sitting in front of her the second day. She had ordered a meal, but it was just an ordinary, low cost burger. She waited there for several hours thinking she had missed the opportunity to make a connection. The waiter said she seemed heart broken when she left.
Disappointed in his own judgement the guy left sad that he had judged the situation wrong.
After about a year, he figured she had either forgotten about the situation or that she had moved on. He was passing a bakery and looked in the window where he recognized a picture of the lady on the wall. He went in to ask about the lady but they said she no longer worked at that bakery. He asked a few other questions and they told him that she had been busy opening several other new bakeries across the country.
None of this is real, I just made this poop up as I was typing. but you started a thread called story telling, so I figured one of us ought to tell a story.
Good story-- Crappy ending :-) They need to fall in love and live happily ever after-- or get eaten by rabid sharks! Sharks Owned by Protesters who are allergic to gluten-- Better yet Rabid Diabetic sharks that hate bakery owners--
Then anti-bakery owning sharks plot to have the bakery owner on a small raft in a giant tank- The man grabs a small rope to swing out and save the bakery owner. Flashback to a Tarzan movie the man saw as a child- The sharks are jumping and snapping their multiple rows of sharp teeth. The man swings- the lady is screaming and beating at the water to make the sharks go away- (but in reality the science of sharks is that if you splash they are even more attracted because it sounds like a dying fish.) The man is in mid swing There is hope that he will swing out land in the raft and save the day- but just then a great white leaps in the air catches the guys leg- pulls him into the tank with red frothy foaming water- Sharks thrash in this new feeding frenzy- you see an arm skip across the surface of the water until it is caught in the gaping maw of another shark who seems to grin as it is taken to the depths of the tank The lady bakery owner is running through the different recipes of sugar free- low calorie bread - and starts to recite the recipes aloud - much as a nun would in prayer -- But this only enrages the sharks even further and they leap high in the air and land on the tiny raft. The raft spills it contents into the waiting jaws of the hungry sharks-- the last we see the Baker is drawn down into the deep and is no more. The shark have their revenge, So with full stomachs they circle the tank and plot the death of yet another anti-diabetic baker- or candy maker. :-)
Of course if you dissect my story ending the actual flaws are- great whites don't plot revenge- they eat and mate-- that about it-- secondly- no great white live in captivity for very long-- and never has a full grown be captured and survived. Thirdly it is very hard to swing on a rope and keep your grip unless you are used to doing it--such as Tarzan. Fourth and final flaw- if the man did swing right and get to the raft it is very hard to land in a raft- and actually would probably knock both himself and the lady into the water - where the great whites might or might not even perceive them as food.
SO a short story is a story with a fully developed theme but significantly shorter and less elaborate than a novel. So I guess your short story fit that- than my ending didn't follow the central theme. :-( Research sometime kills all the fun.
Short story- So a man was interested in the girl across the aisle from where he worked- He worked at the local fish market tossing fish to customers across the counter. All day long his boss would shout out a type of fish- and he would grab the fish and toss it to the boss- who would bag it and collect the cash. "Mackerel!" shouted boss- Our young hero picked up a mackerel and tossed it to the front. It was extremely hot this day and the young man took of his shirt. Well tossing heavy fish all day really developed the young man. There were more then a few stares, comments and hushed giggling as most of the lady's did their shopping in the market. Our young lady worked in the flower stand just across the isle from the fish monger. She would sneak glances at our hero and avert her eyes when ever their eyes met across the table of ice and fresh fish. More then once our young hero would stare at her longingly, and promptly toss a fish to high or to low, causing the boss to have to really stretch out for the fish- or he would drop it entirely. The boss would frown but wouldn't berate him in front of customers. Customers on the other hand wouldn't mind a bit. Our flower girl would just cover her mouth and giggle- which embarrass the young man. "Surely she is laughing at me and thinks I am an utter fool- " he lamented to himself. "Who could ever want a fish monger" ONe day a large man saw the money in the flower girls till and and decided to make it is own. He pointed behind our young woman and asked a " how much water will blue flowers need?" As the young lady turned he snatched the money and started running pushing his way through the crowds. "Stop Thief! Help!" The criminal tought he was getting away with it when Wham!!! Tuna to the face- The large fish knocked him right off his feet. He heard that audible and unmistakable crackle and pop of a broken nose. Our hero had thrown a perfect pass and clobbered the guy right in the kisser. Our hero picked up the box of spilled money and headed over to the flower girl who was whipping back tears-- Just as she stood on her toes to utter those soft sweet words of thanks- she was eaten by a shark no one saw in the corner :-)
