When my truck is set to auto and the switch is in 2wd should I beable to turn the front drive shaft and the outer shafts at the differential by the wheels? Mine does not turn.
You should be able to turn the front driveshaft by hand when you are in 2WD.
This sounds like one of the front hubs is locked. Try turning the auto hubs to "lock" and "auto" a few times, then try turning the front driveshaft by hand again. This might do the trick.
If you still have a problem, you will have to jack the front end up enough to get the front wheels off the ground. Turn the front driveshaft by hand and the wheel with the locked hub should turn.
Both hubs are probably locked up. If it was just one then the d/s would turn and the differential would send the "power" to the unlocked hub since it has the least resistance and it is an open diff in the front. You wouldn't even need to jack up the truck, if you reach behind the spindle and grab the u joint, the locked one won't turn. Again, b/c it is an open diff.
In this situation, you need to check for vacuum leaks. There are probably hundreds of threads on the ESOF, so do a quick search and be prepared for some reading.
