Differential failure 2007 F450SD

Hey folks, new guy here.

Our company has a pair of 2007 F450SD's with the 6.0, these are cab & chassis trucks that were built into wreckers. The one I drive has about 93K miles on it, the other driver has around 55K.

This morning his rear end failed completely; driveshaft spins but rear end is freewheeling. As I understand it this is NOT covered under warranty, as the cab & chassis trucks (or these trucks in general?) are 36K warranty.

Sounds like it's getting ready to get very expensive; dealer hasn't pulled the cover on the rear end yet but the moment they said "not covered" my boss freaked out, understandably. I'm checking independent shops in my area since the dealer's not going to cover it.

I did a search in here hoping to see if others had mentioned this problem but didn't find anything. The truck seemed to give no warning; I'd driven it in the recent past and all seemed well, then just the sudden failure. No leaks, no noise, nothing - just all of a sudden it's stripped completely out.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Richard

The warranty on ANY 2007 Superduty is 5 years/60,000 miles, except the diesel engine which is 5 years/100,000 miles. So whether it is a pickup or a chassis cab it's out of warranty long before 93,000 miles.

Now if your boss has been buying his trucks at that dealer they CAN do an after warranty adjustment. It's up to the dealer, so being nice to them helps.

Actually, I think they're Dana 110's or something like that.

I suppose I could have been clearer; my truck has 93K, the other driver has 55K - HIS is the truck with the blown up rear.

Thanks for the clarification on the warranty. I'll give my boss a shout and see if he gets anywhere with the dealer on it.

OOPS! I see that now that I re-read it.

I don't know for sure that a commercial vehicle has the same warranty. But the after warranty adjustment is a good possibility.

Diff failure

someotherguy, as way of intro, my name is PartsPaul and I am a parts manager at a Ford dealer in Central Florida. By what you have written, your 2007 F-450 should be covered under the Ford powertrain warranty coverage if it is indeed below 60k miles. Several things to make sure of. Is it really a 2007 model, or is that when your company bought it? We go by model year, not date of sale. And if it went thru a "builders pool", where the trucks might sit 2 to 4 months before being sent to the aftermarket body installer, it might be an 2006. This is the case in many motorhome chassis. And why is the dealer refusing to cover this under warranty? Send the v.i.n. to me at parts@timberlandford.com and I can verify model year and coverage.

Thanks Paul; I don't have the VIN handy as the truck is currently at the dealership. It's absolutely a 2007 model as I did verify both as 07's using the VIN, during a debate with someone about the need to use ULSD in these trucks.

I'm glad to hear confirmation about the warranty length. It's possible the person at the dealer is just misinformed. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt but only up to, and not beyond, the point to where it starts costing us money we don't need to spend.

Welcome Richard! I have a Dana 80 in the classifides from a '07 F350 dually. Rated for 11,500#'s (I think...) Might be something your boss would consider, as the price of a new axle from Ford would be a couple/few thousand...

My 06 F350 dually rear end went completely away at 40,000 miles. The dealer where I bought it would not even think of warranty. In fact, he charged me $50 service fee to tell me there was something wrong with it and wanted another $280 to tear into it and give me a detailed estimate.

I found out they don't work on them anyway. They farm them out to a drivetrain shop. I went to that shop and he told me that yes, he did do all their differential and transmission work but they did not get any special price. He charged me the same price, $1,160.00. The gears were OK but every bearing and limited slip disc/clutch had to be replaced.

The right side wheel seal had worn a groove in the metal that was so deep they had to shim it and install an oversized seal.

No, I have not been back to that dealer since.

The owner of the drivetrain shop told me they work on hundreds of Dana differentials and he has never seen on fail this early.

Thanks ATC but I doubt it would be the same rear end - not just the difference between F350 and F450, but also that this is a cab & chassis rear which is narrower than a regular dually. As someone said earlier, pretty sure the rear in this truck is a Dana 110.

Looks like a -great- price for someone that needs the particular rear end you have, though!

Richard
