by power surge do you mean an increase in rpm? all i know is that when you are doing about 55 and you left off the fuel say when you are going down hill, it starts to buck pretty bad. when you step on the fuel again it clears right up. kinda weird to me, never really run into this before. i am getting a slight amout of white smoke, but there was some old fuel in the tank when i bought it. its definately not drivetrain related. also i noticed that my fast idle doesnt want to kick down(cold start advance probly isnt turning off either, maybe this has something to do with it?) anybody have the part number for temp sensor that controlls the fast idle and cold start advance.
Make sure the connector is plugged on on the coolant temp switch.
The way it comes out of the harness, it is rather easy to pull the connector off the switch while changing the glow plugs.
For the bucking/misfire problem, my first line of attack would be a triple strength dose of Diesel Kleen in one tank.
Run that for a day, then change the fuel filter.
When you change the filter, fill it with straight Diesel Kleen.
The engine will run a little funny on straight Diesel Kleen, but a minute or two idling will get fuel back in the system and everything will go back to normal.
And hopefully the missing/bucking will be gone before the tank of fuel is gone.

thanks for the advice, if the connector was unplugged then i would not get high idle when cold right? right now the high idle wont kick off unless i unplug it from the idle solenoid.
How are the motor mounts and tranny mount, and does the shifter move when this happens? It almost sounds like a separated mount on the right hand side.
Doing it in 4th only pretty much rules out the tranny, since that is direct drive, no power going through gearing aside from the rear end.
i will look everything over again but i am almost positive it is a engine miss. anyone have that part number for the temp sensor that controls the high idle and cold start advance? with the engine at full operating temp. the high idle and cols start advance will not shut off.
Here is the info from another post, looks like that switch may be getting hard to find.

The engine temp switch is known as:
E8TZ9E939A $48.00 sell $36.00
SWITCH FUEL INJ SYS
That is the switch that allows power to the fast idle and timing advance until the engine rises to 112*F then is opens and shuts off power........ You could use a wire and switch to operate it temporarily..... just use spade terminals in each of the connector holes wired through a switch...... run with it on until the engine "warms" or you drive away.
Online dealers might have a listing, but the ones I frequent don't show it now.
HOWEVER THE DIRECTFORDPARTS SPONSOR ON THE LEFT SHOWS IT BY PART # Give him a chance......
