So if im hauling 4.5 cords of firewood on a trailer, do i need to worry about this?
That comes out to roughly 11-12K lbs.

As long as it is yours and you are not getting paid for it. To need a CDL you must be over 10K Trailer AND over 26,001 total. So you should be fine with the wood.

Should read 10k trailer OR over 26,001 total.

Cheaf lic is for school bus, limo, etc. Passenger vehicle for hire basically, I am not sure if a taxi cab driver has to have one or not.

Class B cdl is a single vehicle over 26001 pounds, NOT carrrying a trailer that weighs more than 10k.

Calss A is for tractor trailer, pulling over 10 k, but not piggybacked. Thats its own seperate endorsement for tandom or trip.

Hope some of this info helps.

And for whoever needs that tractor shipped, get with me, I might have a truck int he area when your ready.

You can pull 10k and greater with a Chaufeurs license If I'm not mistaken. 26K and greater needs the CDL.

OK I had to pull out the regulations on this one. The regulations are:
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Revised through January 1, 2007

49 CFR 383.5 Definitions

Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) means a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle-

(a) Has a gross combination weight rating of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more) inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds); or

(b) Has a gross vehicle weight rating of 11,794 or more kilograms (26,001 pounds or more); or

(c) Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver; or

(d) Is of any size and is used in the transportation of hazardous materials...Yadda, yadda, yadda...

So in summary as defined in paragraph (a) it has a gross combo wt. of >26,001 WITH ('with' being the key word) a GVWR of >10,000 lbs.
But as stated in the beginning of the definition the vehicle must be in "commerce", which means for hire, to transport passengers or property. So that being said as long as you are not for hire then you will be fine and you are not sublect to the limits imposed in the following 4 paragraphs.

P.S. I know these Regulation were thru Jan of last year but to my knowledge these regs have not been changed.

Also PLEASE post back if you do not agree so we can discuss.

You would be restricted by the gvwr of the truck also.

Gettin' even more complicated. And yes, you are prob never going to get stopped if your truck looks clean and well loaded. But...

If some old lady pulls out in front of you and you cream her and her kids....

Now ALL your ducks had better be in a row. Drug testing? In a pool? Farmers are NOT excluded neither are sole-props. Got your service logs? Did you pass a recent DOT physical? Is it up to date?

And in the end it relies on who pulled you over and what kind of a mood, etc. i was stopped in Mount Airy, NC w a F-350 dually. The weighmaster said in NC my Minn plates were only good for 16K. I was at 17,800. I wasn't able to leave before I got a gal from the MN sec. of state to explain that those plates in MN allowed 32,500 - reciprosity prevailed and away we went.

I know you should have at least a chauff endorsement. And I thought that a B was good for >10k gross combination up to <26,001 (unless your trailer is over 10k then A).

when it comes to a personal liscence, just get the Class A and be done with it, then YOU are good to drive whatever you want, but the vehicle still has to be legal. the class A is not hard to get I got it first try when I was 19.
