can i replace my pcv valve with on of those breather filters? what about the thing on the other valve cover? would this help or hurt anything since they both run to the intake
I wouldn't. pcv (positive crankcase ventilation valve) vacuums all the bad crap out of the block and returns it to the cylinders to be reburnt and kicked out the exhaust pipe.

These gases include compounds harmful to an engine, particularly hydrocarbons (unburned fuel), as well as carbon dioxide and water vapor. If allowed to remain in the crankcase, or become too concentrated, the harmful compounds will condense out of the air within the crankcase and form corrosive acids and sludge on the engine's interior surfaces. This can harm the engine as it tends to clog small inner passages, causing overheating, poor lubrication, and high emissions levels. To keep the crankcase air as clean as possible, some sort of ventilation system must be present
You need a source of clean air, either from the inside of the air cleaner or a vavle cover breather. Air then is sucked through the crankcase, throught the PCV and into the intake manifold. It's a good system.

The size of the orifice within the PCV limits the volumn of air pulled through the crankcase so that it doesn't mess up the carburetor calibration.
Also, the PCV valve is designed to close suddenly if the engine should backfire through the intake. Without this, a backfire could pressureize the crankcase and blow out any number of gaskets.
As long as you have one of the PCV's pulling vaccuming it should be fine. You can see in the pic of my engine the drivers side oil filler has a filter on top of it to pull in clean air and the PCV on the passenger side is connected to the vacuum port on the backside of the carb to suck back into the engine.
