Since your working on an after 1948 engine I think a regular valve spring compressor will work. The bar was used to pull tension off the spring to pull the guide lock. Since removal of the keepers will release the pressure against that lock on the later design their removal is easier. If the guides are not worn you may as well leave them alone. kotzy

i used a small valve spring compressor from a small engine i'll have to find the part numbers for , but it worked to change two guides and etc. with the flatty still in the truck .
