Wink intake coil:Ohms: 1 primary, -0- secondary

Hi again,

Did more diagnosing on my 90 2.3 (my threads are all over FTE!) & found the intake coil primary @ 1 ohm & secondary @ -0- ohms when it's suppose to be 11-14k ohms.

Also checked for coil to ground has none.

And truck still runs but won't perform step 2 of the EEC-IV diagnostics testing.

Bad coil or what?

Just have cheked mine, about 0.8 ohm primary and 7 Kohm secondary.

11-14 K - coil wont working, spark is weak.

0,8 ohm means that max coil current shoul be about 15 Amp/, but really it is much lower, becouse coil has 7-8 mHn inductance. To prevent coil overheating TFI opens switch if no PIP pulses in 2 seconds, like ECU turns fuel pump off.

Hi Pablo-UA,

Retested & new findings:

Amongst all the other new parts that I have added to this truck I also found that intake coil recepticles 1 & 3 had -0- ohms & 2 & 4 have 14k ohms. The exhaust both sets 14k ohms. As for the intake coil I changed it out & both sets on it measures 14k ohms.

And still can't get EEC-IV >no distributor< diagnostic codes in part 2 engine just ramps up & down.

OH YEAH! Thank you for checking yours out so you could tell me what they are.

He means primary and secondary coils (ore low voltage and high voltage).

Now here coils on plug are popular, but really it is not a coil only, but ignition module and coil in one unit....

Hi again Pablo-UA, my other friend,

What are intake and exhaust coils??? jd

OK! As I tested both of these coils I found them to be exactally the same w/ respect to the input voltage; 12-14VDC, & their ohmage values; 14k ohms, and when I went out on line there was no seperate listings from AutoZone here in Connecticut.

Now here coils on plug are popular, but really it is not a coil only, but ignition module and coil in one unit....
With this EEC-IV-EFI truck the ignition module is mounted in front of the intake manifold & both coils are mounted in front of their respective #1 cylinders; 1 on the intake side & 1 on the exhaust side (8 plugs to change out..what a bother!)

Also thank you for your continuing help.

Nothing wrong with being tested. It helps us all to learn. The link is no help, doesn't tell me anything. I assume from your latest post that the intake/exhaust reference is to location/mounting??? jd

Wink explaination

Hi jimdandy,

Sorry, hope this works:

On the intake side of the 2.3 engine a 4-tower spark plug coil is mounted on a bracket & is used instead of the trditional single tower coil & is thusly used for firing off 4 plugs in a random order & the same exhists on the exhaust side for the other 4 plugs hence the 8 plugs needed in this 4-banger Lima engine which makes it one of the best in it's emissions class is what I have gathered.

Does this help?
