You could always try the old pull-the-negative-cable-off-while-it's-running-and-see-if-it-dies test.

Jim, I have an alternator but I don't even think anyone would take it for a core. I wouldn't expect it to be any good for more than that. But if you want that I'll throw it in too .

No, I don't need that Rich, I would just wait until payday, and take in my alternator as a core when I get the new one. And who knows,? it may turn out to be a voltage regulator instead.

If you have access to a volt-meter, check at the battery terminals while it is running - s/b around 14-18 volts.

Jim,
Why are you convinced that it is your alternator? It could be one of several issues. It would ease our minds if we knew the results of some of your testing.

I was convinced it was the alternator because the battery tested good two weeks ago. However, I took it to Autozone today, and it tested bad. So I bought a new one, and drove the truck all day with no issues. So, I guess that 9 year old Die Hard finally gave up.

Glad to hear that it is up and running.

It is still worth checking to see if your alternator is putting out enough go-go juice. Around here, Autozone and several other parts places, will lend you some tools so that you can check out flaky problems. See if they have a voltmeter that you can borrow to make sure that your alternator output is adequate.

I have a VoM meter (two actually) but don't know how to test the alternator. I would imagine just check the voltage across the battery terminals when it is running correct? If it is not above 12.6v then it is not charging. However, that would not tell me if it was the alternator, or the regulator

Alternator is good if you measure 14 - 18 across the battery when running. I couldn't tell you about the regulator.

Jim, do you have a seperate regulator? I thought everything over the last 20+ years is internally regulated? You can buy rebuild kits for anything though.

Not 100% sure, but it looks like I have a separate regulator. It is mounted on the driver side inner fender rail. Autozone has several alternators for this model, and some have internal regulators, others don't. So it seems it was a toss of the coin at Ford that year which ones got it and which ones didn't.
