i have a couple of ???s

ok so after looking for my oil leak i think my steering box is leaking... around where the steering linkages hook up to it... ok how likely is this??? and what do i do to fix it??? we do this on out big trucks all the time... we just take them off and bring them to a machine shop and let them do the rebuild... ok and i asked this but i am going to ask again... ok i have 3.73s in my truck.. and i want to swap to 4.10s right... so right now my truck will do 60 in 3rd. how fast will it run in 3rd when i put in the 4.10s??? and does 60 in third sound right with 3.73s??? that is really reving the engine tho... and here is something to make you guys get exited i raced my buddy in his ss silverado tonight and beat him until i run out of gear in 4th... when i grabbed 5th. my truck bogged down and he pulled ahead of me... and another ??? why ok my truck has a quite a few mods... and my uncles is stock same year same motor and everything with no mods and 4.10 gears and his is a auto... and i can not come close to staying beside of him in a race... what is up with that???

the 4.10s will get you off the line (if he can get them too hook) but you should always be able to out top end a similar truck with 4.10s if you have a 3.73 ratio

For the leak that is the most common spot. its not easy to get the pitman arm off and the seals aren't real fun to out but it can be done. Napa sells a seal kit.

As for the gears chances are you have 3.55's not 3.73. 3.73 aren't stock and not many companies make 3.73's. the stock ratio's are 3.55 and 4.10.

Most guys running the 1/4 competitively are running 3.55's just because of the RPM limits of the diesel. Guys towing lots and pulling sleds like the 4.10. The gear's depend mainly on what you are doing with the truck.

Could it be your oil cooler leaking which is above/close to S box.
and what do i do to fix it???

First find what's leaking and or what has come loose.
... ok i have 3.73s in my truck..

As far as I am aware the '97 and earliers only came with 3:55s or 4:10s, what tire size you runin'?
Would call T Wilman and get a 4 position chip with specific tuning files for your ride....

60 in 3rd is pretty general. Running 70 mph in OD what RPM are you running. around 2k will be 3.55 and 2300-2500 will be 4.10's

The tag on the axle is under passenger side on rear of axle. Thanx Tim for the door codes.
