Axle swap questions D60 to Sterling
Will a 10.25" Sterling axle from a mid 90's F350 single wheel truck replace the D60 rear axle in my '79 F250 with out a ton of work? I have read both yes and no. Has any one done this swap? Can the wheel studs be changed from 9/16" to 1/2"? If no, can the studs on my '79 D60 front be changed to 9/16" ? The reason for the question is I have found a Sterling with the right gear ratio (3.55) to replace the 4.10 rear I now have. I have a set of 3.55's for the front axle.
The 4.10's have my Cummins wound up tighter than a cheep gutar

I am answering the stud question in a round about way. From my experience, as long as the wheel will fit over the 9/16" stud, the acorn nuts for the 9/16" lug will fit just fine and hold the wheel properly that you are using on the 1/2" stud wheels.
I start to tighten from the top and make sure everything is centered before I torque to 140 pounds.
