Coolant drain plugs on block?

Vehicle: 1971 F100 302 c.i.

Where are the plug(s) located? I've found two candidates:

rear of drivers side, small plug (7/16th?)
front of passengers side, small plug (7/16th?)
Thanks!

Well you have two choices. remove them and see if cooolant pours out or nothing comes out. If nothing comes out then you possibly found the oil galley plugs.

I did just that last Saturday. the fitting is 3/8ths, not 7/16th. Well I sorta did it. The passenger plug cam right out along with a ton of water (I was right!) However I ended badly rounding off the drivers side one so it'll never come off!

Since we're on the subject, can anyone see why removing one of the plugs and installing a mechanical temperature gauge sending unit in its place would be a bad idea?

The only reason not to is that you wont get a true reading of the head temps. hence the reason they are normally installed in the cross over jacket on the intake manifold.
