What do i do? 6.8 vs 7.3

I am a 16 yr old looking at gettin a new truck. I dont tow hardly anything and dont need a diesel for power. The only reason i would consider one is because, i love my 6.9 & gas mileage & b/c they're just cool. Can anyone tell me which truck i should get. I live 14 miles from school and 4 from work. The driving to school is some city some highway. To work its mostly city. I filled up my 6.9 today and it got 14.3 & at 4.11 per gallon thats kinda expensive. I thought if i got a gas that got the same mpgs it would still be like $0.70 cheaper than what i have. I've found two on autotrader that i can afford. one 6.8 & one 7.3. Any comments on the two trucks will be greatly appreciated. I've noticed that diesels are more expensive initially....is it worth it if im not towing anything???

Hey, welcome here, youve come to the right place. I was in your position, i bought my truck when i was 15 and didn't even have my license. Diesel was cheaper then, but now it's outrageous out the ***. I bought it because of the brute power, the cool factor of having one, the sound, and everyone knowing you have an awesome truck. I like the looks of the first one, if you like rowing gears, an automatic just won't do it for ya. I'm in that position but i drive my auto like a manual alot. The v-10 is less fuel efficient, but the gas is cheaper. It also will fit better for short runs to work and school, as a diesel doesnt like to be started and not reach operating temperature. If you aren't set on the diesel, i'd go for the first one honestly.

As frickin cool as I find our 7.3s, I'd have to agree with Kris on his post for your position. Ultimately, it is your decision, and you won't be disappointed with the diesel, and especially the awesome folks on this particular forum. The exception is for the maintenance costs and daily fuel costs on limited budgets.

Luckily for now, up here in Canuckleland, the gas and diesel prices are about a penny apart in difference.

My dad, on the other hand, wants me to get a car. So something gettin 18 mpgs would be more appealing (to him & me paying for the gas) than something getting 12. The only thing im worried about, is, would it hurt the (dsl) engine to drive that shorter distance to work. My dads 99 silverado has time to warm up going from work to the place where we're moving to, but its a 5.3 gas. Right now i live out in the middle of nowhere.....school is 13 miles away and work is more like 20. So my 6.9 is fine w/having enough time to warm up. Today at the shell station when i filled up gas was $3.35 & dsl $4.11 What i have now is an auto, so im not used to it. I am used to the $50 oil changes though. Is the psd gonna have more exp. oil changes? Mines 10 quarts. Sry for it being so long....... I dont want to end up w/something i dont like.

The PSD is going to take 14-15 quarts of oil.

Damn 15 qtz, I went out today and bought three gallons of amsoil 14/w40. I was kind of shocked as I haven't done an oil change on my truck. It's new to me so when I heard 15 I was like WTF! lol oh well, I'll have fun tomorrow when I get it taken car of. I don't think I have a container that big to think of it.

Holy crap!!!!!

A 2000 crew cab 4x4 PSD with only 92K on it for $9300?????? Whether I wanted a diesel or not I'd buy that and bring it to PA and resell it.........you can't touch a '99-'02 like that for anything less than 15 - 16K up here that I was able to find.

In fact, you buy it and hold on to it until October when I get back from Iraq and I'll give ya $12k for it for your troubles. lol

If the diesel wasn't about to blow up or lose a tranny I would steal it for that price, you could sell that thing for 16K atleast for the amount of miles on it. I was in your position when I got out of HS, but I knew what I wanted and that was a diesel no if, ands, or buts. I looked at a few gassers but to me a Superduty with a gas engine isn't a Superduty, if I wanted a gasser I would get a 150. If you can afford it and its what you want then get the diesel if its in good shape for that price.

Ummm I didn't see where you went for one more gallon. ppppssssstttttt....3 gallons is only 12 quarts....you need one more gallon.

Most parts store carry a 15 quart oil catch. I got mine at my local Autozone when I went to do mine. And don't forget to prime the filter and replace the drain plug washer with each oil change. You can get a pack of 3 for like $4.

And I didn't see if anyone else noticed, but the second truck is listed as a crew cab....it's an extended cab....wrong description.

His long-@$$ links didn't truncate like they usually do for some reason. That's why it's so wide.

To the OP, there are a couple active threads in the SuperDuty forum about this very subject. All things being equal, I'd get the 7.3 hands down. More power, better fuel economy, and way more fun (IMHO).

I would venture to say there is something either out or on it's way with the 7.3 he posted based on the price- no one in their right mind would let a low mileage forged rod PSD go that cheap unless something is broke.
