Sand/media blasting in Northern California

Another Idea ???
Maybe my $25 Solution? Reformulator, then spray with Kragen's Bedliner. It seems to be pretty strong and if I mess it up in a few years I'll just redo it. Best of all it only took about 2 hours to do. I really didn't do very much prep at all. I expected to do a second coat and more prep later. I just haven't seen the need yet as it still looks really good imo. It's just a truck and Rhino or Line X is going to scratch too.
If you add the carpeting it ends up being under $50. I'm so cheap
When I repaint the truck I want to take out those small dings at that point. Just didn't see the need with all the dents on the exterior right now.
Just a thought......
Let me add - Line X is tougher against heavy use as far as I can tell. My buddy has Rhino Lining and we haul motors, cherry pickers, engine stand in the back a lot. The Rhino Lining has gotten pretty chewed up over the years. Mine has the carpet in it so it's never really been a problem for my truck. If I scratch the bumper up. I just get out the old semi-gloss black paint and respray it after a wash and quick sand. Nothing but a thing.

Hey AJ,
Is Reformulator something that converts rust to make it inert? I am using either Rust Dr, or POR15 for that.
I am tempted to do this myself with herculiner after I finish prepping the bed. After calling a few of the places people mentioned, they all will have to media blast, primer, then apply the linex. I am figuring it will cost me some where around $800-1000 no matter where I am taking it. Since this truck at best will be worth $5k, I think I will do it on my own by power cleaning it, then treating the rust, and then applying a bed liner. If this was a brand new super duty, I would get it commercially done.
Thanks to everyone who shared information. Even though I changed my idea of what I want to do, I needed your info to help me make that decision.

Sandblasting
Hello,
I have a couple of places to recommend for you. 1 Which is American Sandblasting off of Florin Perkins Road on Sacramento. The second is a guy who is just starting out and will come to you if you want, his name is Brand Brinkman and his email address is kiteallday@yahoo.com and he seems very reasonable.
Good Luck
Scott

Plus, if you have paint or something spill it's a lot easier to clean up than a treated bed. In the case of the do it yourself coating. You would just touch it up. That's what I like about doing it yourself.
I'd be glad to help you with it.
Reformulator - Rustolum $7 a can x2-3
Bedliner Coating - Your choice but, the $8 a can stuff from Kragens is OK.
I think the herculiner stuff you plan on using might be better. Let's take a look at that.

This is nice to know. How would they sand blast a truck bed at your house though?

But, I mean, where does the media go with the portable machine. How much do one of those cost. Is it like a carpet shampooing machine or something? Or, does the media just end up in the street?
And OMG ... I wonder what he'd charge me to media blast my whole truck body. That would be the cream. I also have two more cars that we could do if it wasn't too expensive. Last quote we got on media blasting a car was over $550. Worth it if you plan on putting a $4-5K paint job on it. But, cost prohibitive if you plan on putting a $1000 paint job @ 50% off like Macco offers this time of year. I might consider it if under $300 say. Not likely though.

"Basically once I am up and running which I hope is soon. I will charge by the hour and it is $175 hour at your place or $100 at my location. and your frame won't take long I will be able to blast a small car in 3hrs. so your frame and what ever else you would want done would be less then 3 hrs easy. I do have though an hour min. for a job.
Thanks for emailing me Brad.
55 Ford thats nice right now I am getting my company vehicle already its a 65 chevy suburban."
I figure 3 to 4 hours on my truck so this would be a great deal at a 100.00 per hour. As for the soda, I assume that it get's swept up and put in the garbage since it will be non tonic but I could be wrong on this. I know at the other place I mentioned he recycles it as much as possible. American was expensive though at 900.00 to do my 66 Chevelle inside and out. I am going to give Brad a try I think.
While at the Good Guys Show in Pleasanton Saturday there was a company selling media blasting machines and you could get a portable one for about 1,000.00 which would hold about 150 pounds of media. I am thinking about purchasing this too so I have it in my tool inventory but we shall see. The media will run about 25.00 per 50.00 pound bag and it would take a few bags to do the truck so they tell me. I asked about reusing the media after it has hit the ground and he told me that quite a few guys just sweep it up and filter it to use again. Sounds like a good way to go one you get past the capital investment of buying the machine. I do know that there are cheaper machines that could be had for as little as 500.00 that would do the job too..
Sorry for being so windy on the subject. I need to do a frame so and think this will be the way to go.

Hum, If I take them to him on my trailer ..... maybe.
Thanks for the information Scott's 55 Ford. It wasn't too winded.... you should read some of my post. It was all very good information. When I get a warehouse for my shop.... next few years. I'd for sure buy one for all my project we do. I have a four man team..... plus all of my FTE buddies that could really use a set up like this.
But, for $100 and hour and not having to do it yourself.... it would be good to talk to him about my present (near future) project.
Excuse me if I rambled. ;-)
BTW - I have access to a small sandblaster cabinet for parts under 18". It can take some time to get all of the paint off.
Please use a mask while doing any sandblasting. Even cabinet blasting... It get out no matter what you do.

OK, so I looked at the herculiner. It look like pretty good stuff. For your 8' bed Karl you need the standard kit and then an additional quart. Actually, Kragens sells this stuff. But, I'll bet they only sell the gallon kits and you'd still have to order the quart to save money. But, even if you bought two kits it would only be $200 for the coating.
I want to see how this turns out. I might cough up $99 (SB) and redo mine if it's more durable than what I have.
