1979 Truck Models

Hello,

I am in need of some clearification on truck models for 1979 F-150's. I'm pretty sure what my dad had was a '79 F-150 XLT. I've tried to do searches for this model and keep seeing things like "Custom" or "Ranger." Was there just an "XLT" package? I'm confussed. My dream is to find a truck just like my dad's and restore it. I know it was an automatic with a 350, 4x4, 2 gas tanks, two-tone paint (green and white) and had amber parking lights on top of the hood. Does this sound like an "XLT" to you guys? Any help would be greatly appreciated...especially if someone had photos. Thanks in advance.

Back then all F series pickup were called Ranger's. The Ranger XLT, Extra Luxury Trim,
gave the truck a nicer interior trim level with a different type of seat covering, different header panel and door panel inset and better interior insulation. It also gave the truck the upper chrome panel on the tailgate that is about 4 inches wide. An XLT will have a badge on the cowl under the Ranger badge and one on the glove box door inside the truck. I'm sure there may be a couple other difference's but that's all I can think of now.

Not true, they all had a baseline of a Custom and were upgraded to either a Ranger, Ranger XLT or a Lariat.

Yup. Mine's a custom. Came with zero options other than a dealer installed bumper.

I highly doubt that, unless someone swapped in a Chevy engine. Most likely it had a 351M.

Looking at the picture, it looks very similar, except the side mirrors didn't have all those bars coming down to the door. It seemed much simpler...maybe just one silver colored bar that connected in two spots. Also, the rims where much different...more like star shaped? Black and chrome maybe? I know it had chrome trim like the one in the picture. Yes, I meant roof lights, and yes...351. I started to wonder about that after I posted.

As you probably have figured out, I do not know much about trucks, but I am very interested in finding a '79 Ford like my dad had. Seeing that picture really brings back some memories. My dad doesn't remember it being a "Ranger" and I can't really recall seeing Ranger anywhere on the pickup...outside or inside. I do appreciate the help.

I also know that it had cruise and AC, if that helps any. Green interior with a brown wood grain look in some areas. Sliding rear window. That's about all I can remember. Any more help would be greatly appreciated...I love pictures.

Thanks!

I was actually wondering about the colour scheme.

Types of Mirrors, wheel covers are an option.

I bet the truck had these on it ?

You could Google 79 f150 in images, this would give you pages of pics you could browse and compare at the same time. The cruise and A/C rule out it being a custom and with the chrome package I'm thinking XLT. What type interior can you recall??, this would certainly help narrow the field.

Yes...that looks more like it. Same wheels...same mirrors only green and white where the two colors.

I discribed the interior as best as I could in my last post. I guess I don't know what you'd be looking for. If you mentioned some options...I could probably tell you, but my memory isn't that great to just recall it on my own. Thanks for the help.

So to clearify...I probably need to look for a "1979 F-150 Ranger XLT?"

Well if it had that striping then it was a Ranger Explorer.

No stripping as far as I know. It had a two tone green on top and bottom and white in the middle...just like the picture in the post.
