Yup, its only held in by 2 bolts. You will need to get the tire down in order to access those bolts though.
If you arent able to get the tire down, you will need to take a grinder the cut that u-shaped piece that holds the tire up.
If the handle wont stay in that slot it may just be that the slot is broken. Thats pretty much what happened to mine. You could crank on it all day long but it would neither raise nor lower the spare tire.

Mine doesnt move at all...Im not even sure if I have the right crank for it. Is it located under the hood? I'm the 2nd owner of this truck so if the crank under the hood isnt for the spare tire I dont have the right one.

I wonder if the cable failing is due to corrosion from salt on the roads... I lived in all southern states and the cable looks excellent after 11 years. I hope it does not fail on me. Ill get under there and inspect it...

the crank is under the hood and slides into the hole to the left of the license plate....there's a tube (mine's gone) that it slides through and then enters the cable winch assembly. i'd try soaking with your favorite lube a few days in a row and see if you can get it to work....if you can't, you'll have to cut the cable so the tire drops and then replace the winch assembly.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Theres no tire on it right now and I wanted to put one on it becaue I have a tool box in my truck bed and I can't fit the 4-wheeler in the back with the spare tire in there too..

you will most likely need someone to pull on the cable as you try to unwind it....it's pretty much a given...and NEVER let it get slack in it as you wind it up, you WILL jam the cable and then you're done.

this is one of the cheapest POS parts i've ever seen.

I'll get the young fella out of the house for this then...If I do get the tire up there I think I'll but some bungie straps around it for added support in case it does break!

use the black rubber ones, or better yet, a ratcheting strap.

Yeah a rachet strap would last longer.

I just broke mine. I guess i over tightened it last time i got a flat. I tried to lower the tire today and it wouldn't go in either direction. The kicker is that I stripped the Piece that the handle slides into...now i have to replace it instead of fix it.
