The 4 will get you around 24-26mpgs while the 6cyl should be around 22.

...although I almost bought an '06 manual last October (deal fell thru because the dealer could not add a cruise control to it as he promised he could). It is darn near impossible to find anyone with a manual.

One suggestion is to go to the www.fueleconomy.gov website and check the actual user reports on that site. I recall that a number of folks were reporting on Escape sticks--various years from '05 on--and my gut says that you might expect high 20's on the road (approaching the pre-'08 EPA rating of 29) with a FWD version if you drive reasonably well. Old EPA's were like 24/29 and I would imagine that you could get fairly close to those figures, maybe less in the city if you sit in traffic. I'd bet you could count on 27-28 mpg at 70.

If anything, the '08 would maybe do a bit better because the power steering is electric (theoretically a bit more efficient than hydraulic PS).

Seems like about .05% of Escapes come with sticks, because "modern" folks like to talk on the cell phone, eat a cheeseburger, put on makeup or shave, read the newspaper, and scroll thru iPod menus---all at the same time---while driving. Dealers won't order any to keep in stock because they won't sell them, and probably a lot of folks who might otherwise want a stick will settle for an auto out of dealer stock because they want the new car TODAY.

My 2006 V6 automatic gives me 25-26 mpg on the highway every day of the week. I would guess the manual should get you a little more.

With the new mileage ratings for 2008, you should be able to equal the EPA highway number at 70 mph. I drive a lot of different rental cars and they all hit the EPA number, including a V6 Escape that averaged 25 mpg.

Thanks for the replys, I can save allot of money in fuel so I am trying to get as much info as possable, I might get a Fusion but like the ground clearance of the escape, I live on a dirt road. In 5 years I will burn $37k in fuel in my f150 and about $22k for the escape. Thats a big diff.

I get about 24 mpg with a V 6 and auto. Check with your insurance before buying a Fusion. I found that an Escape is much cheaper to insure. I was gonna get a Fusion for about the same price, but I checked on insurance and it was quite a bit cheaper to insure the Escape.
