I bought my son a 91 Cougar today which has the common headgasket issue but the PO left it set for about a year with water in the pan. I have found a couple replacement engines but need to know if the later model ones after 93 are any better than the 89 - 93. One salvage yard told me the only difference is some of the intake parts have to be swapped from engine to engine.
So, are there any differences and did the later 3.8s have better/different engineering to esolve the head gasket issue?
Any advice/info will be greatly appreciated. BTW I have found a 92 and a 95 3.8 with less than 100K on them.
Sorry, but I don't know much detail about the 3.8.
The early 4.2 problem was lower intake manifold gasket and/or timing chain cover gasket failures. Never really a problem with the head gaskets on the 4.2.
I really wish I could answer your questions but I just don't know. Maybe somebody will chime in that has more info.
