Question Working out Cam Range in 552ci ???

Hello, I am trying to work out the cam range for my 552ci engine, if the RPM range is 4'000 to 7'000rpm will it come down to 3'000 or 3'200. As I have the Scat 4-500 stroker crank and the Scat 6-7 rods , and the Keith Black forged pistons in 060, ( Edelbrock 61649 CJ heads, Victor intake & a 1050cfm two circuit dominator ) As I am looking at a Comp cams Solid flat tappet cam ( part 34-653-5 ) with 649/642 lift , Duration at 050 is 270/276, advertised duration 310/314. And what will a 552ci engine be in litre size ?? as a stock 460ci is a 7-5 litre . Thanks Jamie, Australia.

552ci = 9.045 liters
What are you going to do with the engine, Street, drag racing, towing, truck??? These will give a better idea about the cam choice.

I had that cam in my last 460. Probably different for you with the extra c.i.'s but in my 460 with good heads it pulled great till the mid 7's when I shifted. The guy I sold it to has now been running it up into the lower 8's and said it does fine.

Thanks guys, the 552ci is going into a 83 XE Falcon , the car is being build strictly for very high performance, with the odd run on the race track, apart from that only driven on the odd week-end. I did intend on using a roller cam but the 61649 C/J heads are set up for a solid or hydraulic cam to 700 lift, as I have spent enough money on this engine hence the choice for the Comp cam 34-653-5. The 552ci will finally be put together this year so any tips on running it in and oil choice would be great, ( Pics of the XE are in the gallery ) Jamie, Australia.

I think the cam choice is quite good for your combo.

Hello, that Cam is the biggest solid flat tappet I could find- I think it will suit my 552ci to a T, could some-one run my 552ci on a laptop dyno to see what horsepower it will have, compression will be around 11-5-1, as I was going to use a roller cam but have now decied to use that Comp cams solid flat tappet in the build, Thanks.

jamie, go to the roller cam selection, the only difference on your heads is valve springs
the flat tappet selection is limiting , for your cube's and weekend use i would pick an
easy [solid] roller cam of similar size to your original choice, you will have have a more
usable rev range overall, low rpm torqe loss will ''not'' happen. se ya neil

IF I do go with a Roller cam apart from the valve springs is there anything else I have to change on the Edelbrock 61649 heads ??? As I looked at a solid roller cam with 708/712 lift with 314/328 duration @ 050.. as Doug Herbert performance has a good range of roller cams / lifters at a reasonable price..

HI jamie, I dont excatly know what you want in your motor but unless you want to go drag racing full time i would look at a cam similar to your old solid grind with better
performance without huge extra modifications or exspence. valve springs and retainers
will have to be changed . make sure your extractors and exhaust system are big enough, running in is different from flat tappet to roller cam, read cam instructions,
penrite 30 good oil, yes i can run dyno program with more info, neil

Jamie if your going to do much street cruising with this DON'T go solid roller as they don't like idling (don't get enough oil the rollers on most solid roller lifters are splash oiled from the crank and need rpms to keep them lubed up)

Neil, the 552ci has Keith black forged pistons with 11-5-1 compression, Super Victor intake with a 1050cfm 2 circuit dominator, Scat 6/7 H beam rods, Scat 4.500 stroker crank. Edelbrock 61649 Cobra Jet heads. ( A mains stud girdle ) could you run the solid cam specs and the solid roller specs to see what difference there is in Horsepower between the two camshafts.. I have the pacemaker headers and will be using twin open 3 inch exhaust system. Thanks Jamie.

HI jamie i will run the dyno program in the next few days , just wonderd if the pacemakers headers/extractors are of the shelf TRY/Y'S or custom made 4into1's with
approx. 2" od primarys and 3" or 4" collectors. the tri/y's will not deliver top power
