300cid to 460 engine swap in my 1986 F150

im going to be doing an engine swap in my 1986 ford F150 2wd from the inline 300 to a 460. i have heard alot of things and wanted to get a few cleared up.

one, i heard that i can use my existing T19 but get a different bellhouseing. is this ture?

Two, i also heard that i might need a bigger clutch?

so if some one could just clear up a few things for me it would be much apprichiated

460 bell housing is definately different (good luck finding one), and yes you'll need a bigger clutch.

With gas prices approaching $4.00 a gallon, why would you want to do this swap if you don't mind me asking, and what are you going to do with the 300?

A 351m/400 bellhousing might fit too. You can go to www.partsamerica.com like did, and look up a 86 f250 with a L6, and then a 86 f250 with a 460. You have to look up a f250, since the f150 never had a 460. The 86 L6 was offered with a 10" and a 11" 10 spline clutch set. The 460 was offered with 11" and a 12" 10 spline clutch.

A 351m/400 bell won't work unless you also convert back to a mechanical clutch, which I don't recommend you do.

And I forgot to add, even though both came with a 11" clutch option, they have different part numbers, so something is different about them somewhere.

Doesn't seem like a very good swap...If you want to tow/haul stuff you'd want an f250 or f350, so why the 460? If you want to go fast, get something that weighs a little less than a pickup and put the 460 in that.

My 460 powered ford is by far the worst vehicle I own for fuel economy. Even my '67 grand prix with 428HO and tripower gets 12-13mpg...and it's almost as big. Good luck with the swap.
