I think RedFord has added valuable information in spite of what everyone has said about him....and yes, I'm upping my post count.

If the pin is rated 30K, but the TRUCK is rated 20K, which do you use?

I would be wary of a bumper pull over 15K or so. With a gooseneck, I'd be comfortable going over that as the pin is mounted in a more appropriate location on the vehicle.

We should all be aware of the ratings....but, I don't think the rating established by the manufacturer is end all, fed is a different animal. I do think tires are the weakest link.
My theory is that the manufacturers have to put a number on the sticker. That number has a standard established somewhere and that rating is probably between 60-75% of some testing that was performed. Same as any other lifting device or load carrying device and it would probably take some digging to actually find what the manufacturer's are held to. Might be in a cfr, but as an example, I would imagine that all manufacturers of X ton trucks are required to rate their hitch at xx% of actual rating. If it was anything different, the government would limit everyone to the MTW that the manufacturer prints out in the handy dandy tow guide.

Reason, why would they allow Ford to rate a hitch at 80% of load and Dodge to rate theirs at 98%?
However, the rate the manufacturer is printing is probably at the lower end to protect them from liability.

Up my post count one more....

Whether he is towing 2K or 50K and whether it is illegal or not is of no ones concern here. No one here is innocent and each and every one of us probably breaks some law (how about speeding) everytime we get in any of our vehicles, whether getting groceries or even without a tow.
I'd rather have had knowledge of how this guys truck performed under those conditions than the information from someone who tows 8K for 20K milers per year. Especially if that truck is a gasser, your information is totally irrevelant in this situation you might as well be driving a hyundai and share your mpg data.

nelkef, thanks for sharing the info. hope positive results from Ford, but they are tight with warranty claims, a 1 year old truck shouldn't have these issues...I think there is a recall for the seat, something about a weld I think.

IMO, if they actually built these trucks with quality as the first priority they couldn't sell them.....they would have to run $80K or more.

Seems like some folks are here for post counts and contibute any way they can...not realizing the lack of value.

Coul't have said it better myself! I, for one, drive a minimum of 60000 miles a year (unloaded, mostly), but over some pretty rough bush roads. I currently drive an '07 Cummins 5.9 (sorry to swear on your board...), and am seriously looking into a new 6.4. For folks like us that depend on our trucks to feed our families, this info is VERY important. I bought my 5.9 knowing that it's a proven engine, and so far, have had nothing but great things to say.

Thanks a million for sharing this info. That said, I guess i'd better finish reading this thread.
