My 2000 Navi developed a strong pull to the right. Best case scenario I hoped was alignment issue. Worst case, something mecahnical. I couldn't get it into the dealer so I took it to Sears auto behind our local mall. It's a new place and is quite convenient being that my fiance works at the mall. Well, they called and told me it was the ball joints. I'm usually a DIYer but let them take care of it. They quoted my $290.00 installed. I looked up prices for ball joints and found them around $50.00. Am I getting raped for labor? Thanks
I guess the question is how long would it take? Now that you know the problem (or at least think you do) call around. I'm guessing they are charging you more for the balljoint and maybe 3-4 hours of work?
They are replacing right and left ball joints. So, I'm assuming that is two. They've had the truck since 7 this morning and it still isn't finished. Never having done this, I am not sure of the time frame it takes. Any ideas?
If it is the lowers they are doing, I just paid $32 apiece for some lifetime warrented ones from autozone. It took me about 90 minutes a side to do them. The uppers are about $60 apiece for the part and as I have never changed them I would be guessing on the time, so I will not go there.
Well, 290.00 for parts and labor on the ball joints and another 69.00 on top of that for alignment. All that being said, truck still pulls to the right and now my steering wheel has a slight left to right wiggle around 40-50 mph. Any ideas on why both are happening? I guess the ball joints being shot and out of alignment isn't causing the pull to the right. I'm lost.
Tires can cause a number of issues (inflation, broken belts, etc.). A brake dragging could also cause some pulling. I would look at the tires to start.
I had a similar situation on my expy. It was a seriously cupped tire due to broken belts.
I can't say 100% that it was the pulling problem but it was definitely hte vibration. I put new struts, wheels and tires on all at the same time and had it aligned. problem solved. Rides like a dream ont he new bilstiens, even on 22's with low pro tires.
When I replaced my upper and lower ball joints plus the tie rod ends, I took the car for a test drive and still had the steering wheel shimmy. So I rotated the tires front to rear and then everything was perfect. The tires had worn unevenly due to the loose front end. This can also happen on cars with worn struts.
price includes alignment? uppers and lowers? right and left sides??
Parts were 76.00 and 210 for labor. That was for replacement of two lower ball joints. Tack on another 69.00 for alignment.
My fiance took the Navi back today and they balanced the front tires again and rotated the tires. It nows pulls to the left which seemingly points to the tires being at fault. They were in need so hopefully a new set will cure the pull. I'm looking to put some 22's on. I'm trying to find something classy in that size. My Navi is silver and I was thinking on maybe a black rim with polished lip.
My wife picked our wheels. It's her vehicle to drive most of the time so I let her choose. I was very skeptical when she picked htese... but they actually are pretty nice! I get TONS of compliments. And I can tell you, I'm the only one at our local track that pulls up with a dirt race car and a tow rig on 22's! haha
