c6 tranny slips

I have a 1977 f-250, 4wd, with a 400 and a c6 tranny.. My question is. My transmission slips when it shifts into 3rd gear. And i dont know anything about transmissions. So i am wondering if it will be cheaper to try and fix the one I have or buy a new one.. A guy i talked to told me to just buy a shift kit??? But i dunno if that guy knows what he is talking about.. So any info would be helpfull..

Chances are that if your transmission is slipping, that installing a shift kit in it would kill it in no time.

Find a transmission shop that is recommended highly around your town, give them a call and see what price / time frame they give you on dropping yours off and having it rebuilt vs. dropping yours off as a core on a rebuilt one. Remember to get a new torque converter, and inspect the flex plate for any cracks, stresses, or fatigue while you have the transmission pulled. If there is anything that just doesn't look right on your flex plate replace it too.

I think that last year i Paid $550 for a rebuilt transmission and new torque converter for my 79 250 4x4 with a C6. One week it had a small slip from 2nd to 3rd, then next week all forward gears were gone.

I would recommend swapping yours out as a core for one that is already rebuilt. The price the shop gives you to rebuild yours could be a 'best case scenario' that assumes all hard internal parts are in good shape and usable. If i hadn't exchanged mine for another that was already rebuilt, and had mine rebuilt i would have ended up spending about another 300 on hard parts, i had exploded drums and many other hard parts that were destroyed and un usable in my old transmission
