NEED HELP Chipped tubo vanes !

Last night while installing new intercooler hoses from Dieselsite ( nice quality hoses ) I noticed that 2 of the vanes on the turbo were chipped and 1 was slightly bent on the tip . About a week ago I started noticing a high pitched whinning sound around 2500+ rpm's I thought it was a leaking intercooler hose since I have been having issues with them leaking but after the new hoses it leads me to think that it's the turbo vanes ? What do I need to do with the the turbo ? And what could have caused this to happen ?

Did you see this on the compressor side? Sounds like you need a new compressor wheel. Let me know if you need help doing it.

No, don't get him all worked up. There was probably something that passed the filter and chipped the turbo spinning as fast as it does. Dont worry about it, the IC caught it. a wicked wheel would be a wise choice.

thats a stock wheel..if your going to replace the wheel..and if your going to chip the truck...its best to go with a wicked wheel to get rid of the surge..

Yes its the filter side of the turbo , is that the compressor side and could those chips in the vains be giving me that high pitched-jet engine-taken off -sound @ 2500 rpm . The truck has a DP tuner what is the surge that everyone talks about? Is a new wheel worth doing ? Thanks

The whistle could defanitely come from the unbalanced or different pitched blades. Put the DP on a higher program, go into OD at around 1600-1800 rpm, and then roll into the the throttle and build boost without downshifting. It is much easier to get surge with a load on. You should begin to hear a chuff chuff chuff sound that kinda resembles a pressure cooker bleeding off. I can do a new wheel for you, but if you feel like pulling the turbo and doing it yourself, its not a HARD job to do in a few hours. It will give you some more sound, it sounds awesome.

Go for the wicked wheel (i think xtremediesel calls it the X wheel or something, but they are all the same. They have it for $60.

The wheel you want (regardless of the name) is the one with ten blades, 5 tall ones and 5 short ones. Most of us have upgraded to that wheel and it's worth every penny.

What makes the wheel with 10 blades so much better? Is it just the sound or does it add performance?

The Wicked Wheel® will:
  • Reduce or Eliminate Turbo Flutter/Surge in your 1994-2003 7.3L Ford Powerstroke.
  • Lower Exhaust Temperatures - NOT increase them
  • Increase Low-End Throttle Response - you may "feel" like your truck has more HP, but it DOES NOT
  • For use in 1994- 2003 7.3L Ford Powerstrokes
  • Is NOT intended as a horsepower mod.
The Wicked Wheel® will NOT:
  • Increase your performance
  • Increase your truck's horsepower
  • Increase or decrease boost
  • Increase or decrease fuel economy
