I've got a 99' and actually use both. Push the cross rails all the way forward and put a hard shell on there. Take 2 straps from the softcase and loop them around the back cross rail, then tie down the remaining ones /w some friction tie-downs that I took from a old explorer. They fit perfectly into the roof rack rails. Looks pretty funny, but hey, got more room inside.

I only have a hardshell. It is a long thin (like for skiis). I love it. It holds 3 pieces of medium size luggage, and incidentals. It is very light (I can put it on and take it off by myself).

I have heard (but have no experience) that the soft ones can flap in the wind (make noise). That kind of thing drives me insane!

I found my Thule on Craigslist for 125.00. Just had to be patient.

Good luck!
Don

I'm running a soft one. Added a couple of bungee cords to kill the flap. Too easy and storage is sweet.

I use a soft one, they work great, you can over stuff them and if properly strapped, they will not flap in the wind. Storage is also much easier, if you are on a trip and don't need it while at where you are staying, just throw in under a seat. Just my two cents.

I got one at sears for 205$. 21 cubic feet. Plenty of room. It has metal bolt downs that strap to the rails across the middle on the roof rack.

Yakima Load Warrior with Yakima bars, soft case and Yakama net. Easy on, lots of room, stable and no flapping.
