Need some low-end torque headers. Any suggestions?
Contact Sanderson headers----650-583-6617----They make a set of shorty headers-that are ceramic coated for the 351m\400 for $495------I am going to order aset in a couple of weeks just before the mechanic takes the heads off my 400 and sends them to the machine ship-----the shorty's will give you MORE low end torque than those long--ugly---things that Irishmen play when they've drank too much scotch , hope this helps , fd

A Tri-Y will give the best low-end of any design. Not sure if they make them for the 351m/400 or not but you might try Stan's for 'em. Make sure you use a balance tube or crossover, this is also one of the best and cheapest mod for low-end, along with a free flowing exhaust.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Dec-01 AT 09:23 AM (EST)]the basic theory is that longer, smaller diameter tubes give you more low-end torque, and shorter, fatter tubes give you more peak horsepower. this applies both to intake manifolds and exhaust headers. the advantages of shorty headers are that you can put them on without getting underneath the vehicle, and they bolt right up to the stock exhaust. the advantage of full-length headers is that they work better. the reason shorty headers are called "shortys" is because they are not the "regular" length. the "regular" length was established because, despite clearance issues, it worked best. before the introduction of the catalytic converter, everybody had regular headers, except maybe a few engine swap guys that had to run "block-huggers". up to 15 years ago, i had never seen or heard of a shorty header. they invented them so people would not have to alter their stock exhaust pipes with the cats in them, because at that time replacement converters were like $300, which was a pretty tidy sum back then. and if you used real headers, then you'd want it dualed out too, and you'd need 2 cats, which was a small fortune!
my guess would be 1-5/8"x36" primaries, but if i were you i'd ask some of the people that make them, like hooker, heddman, dynomax, maybe summit, etc. most should have a "tech question" form you can submit on their web site, and if not that, then a phone #...
tri-y's DO kick butt at making torque, but may be hard to find. same size/length rule applies though. consider the primary to run from the flange, through the first Y, to the collector - which starts at the second Y.
anyway, unless you want to pay for custom-made, you'll just have to pick a standard part - so for max low-end torque, get the ones with the longest, smallest primaries. if you need a tie-breaker, then longer smaller collectors too.

Hey, thanks for the info guys. But I think the only header that I would be happy with is a tri-y design and I cant get those for less than $500.:-X23 So I am going to stick with the stock manifold and port the crap out of them. I have a few extras laying around, so I'll work on those and see what I can come up with.
Thanks again.

sometimes you just gotta call some of these companies - they just push the top selling items on the web. same with summit - not everything is in the catalog.
