If the truck just up and quits, then will restart, probably the camshaft position sensor. Ford has a recall on this available to you.

Very possably the cam sensor but be sure to check the obvious as well, fuel filter, air filter, also I don't know where in the country you are but if this happend shortly after a fill up it is possable to get bad fuel especailly in cold weather.

I would say CPS or the fuel filter if it hasn't been changed in the last 15,000 miles. More than likely a CPS, ford has a recall on them as we speak.

Usually with the CPS going out the truck will just die, then start back again. Sometimes it will not start back. But with you saying it is sputtering before it dies, that might be a fuel problem. Change the fuel filter and see if that helps. Also a common problem is the wireing harness under the VC will sometimes come loose.

Get the recall done first, you never know.

EDIT: Where are my maners. Welcome to FTE.

I never had a 7.3, but both of my 6.0's had an engine service light come on, and that meant you need to drain the water from your fuel filter. On a 6.0 the fuel filter was under the driver, mounted inside the frame. You needed an allen wrench with my first 6.0 and I believe a little bigger allen wrench with my 2005. If you are hands on, you can check it, or if going to a garage, I am sure they will check it out. Good luck, and welcome to FTE.

On the 7.3 the fuel filter in on top of the engine, and only one. Very easy to change compared to the 6.0.

Thanks for the help.
