Just replaced front left hub and all rotors and brake pads (really easy to do) to stop the shaking or more of a "looseness" on my (new to me) 2000 7.3 X. I was feeling a looseness or a slight rattle, not really a clunk, but it mainly felt and still does feel like something in the front end is loose, mainly over rough roads and bumps. The mechanic said it was the hub, which was bad and replaced, but it still has that same feeling of looseness in the front end. It can be heard faintly and mainly felt in your feet on the floor of the X on the bumpy or not perfectly smooth roads. When traveling very slow and turning the steering wheel back and forth, the "clunk can be heard noticeablly in the front driver side area. I've read as much as I can and it seems to be either the ball joints or a sway bar bushing?
Any ideas or suggestions on how to narrow the cause without paying the mechanic to just look at it again (which they already did and said it was the hub)
Also, I will be out of town for the next two weeks and my girlfriend's mom, cousin, sister and aunt are all coming to Denver and they will be taking the X up to the mountains.......is this problem an immediate concern, or something that can have a few hundred more miles put on before being delt with?
5 women, stuck on I-70 in a snowstorm.....while possibly quite entertaining, is not the ideal situation for some out of town suburban ladies!
I had a similar issue when I would turn or go over a bump I could hear a clunk and feel it in the floor. I just got under the truck with my torque wrench and hit every bolt in the steering and suspension I found a couple loose bolts in the steering. I would just go through it all there’s not a lot under there with a 4X4 it will only take 20 minutes or so. I wouldn’t let my girlfriend take a trip in a unsafe truck that is the last thing you need on your mind the hole time she is gone! Good luck!
I have been having the exact same issue with my 2002 X.
It is primarily when I turn left and is coming from the front left wheel area. I will take a look at the ball joints and see if anything in that area is loose.
