Well your local computer idiot is back again with more computer problems. I installed MS office in my daughters Gateway laptop the other night and went to bed while it was installing the updates after loading the software. She said she would watch it and then she had some other stuff she wanted to do online. Two days later she tells me that I broke it since she can no longer get on the internet.
If you plug a cable in the internet works fine. It's just the wireless part. I've tried the repair wizard, removed the wireless network and added it again, uninstalled & reinstalled the wireless network adapter, and tried System Restore. So far no luck.
I ran IPconfig and her Connection-specific DNS Suffix is blank, and so is her Default Gateway under the wireless lan adapter where mine has info filled in those. I just don't know what to do with this information.
That sounds simple enough. Can you tell me how to do that? It is a wireless router with no security encryption since there are no houses close enough to receive my signal. I'm not sure it was the office install that did it, or something my daughter did while later. She clicks on things so fast that I don't think she pays attention to what she's doing. If she was really computer smart she'd be fixing this not me.
Thanks Greg. I should have mentioned it does connect to the router but the connection says "Local only" instead of "Local and internet" like mine does.
Hi Chris,
I'm not yet familiar with Vista, but you should be able to do this by going into the networking (control panel) and go to the properties of the network card and add the specifics of your router/AP. You'll need to add SSID and encription setting if any.
What is your IP address on the wireless card when you do "ipconfig /all" ?
I don't have any encryption so I can skip those steps. My laptop & my wifes are both set to automatically obtain the IP & DNS info and they always work so I don't know what numbers to put in in the properties tab. (If I'm talking about the correct tab.)
The wireless IP address (IPv4) from ipconfig /all on her laptop is 169.254.133.227(Preferred)
Which is no where near the one I show since mine starts with a 192., but I don't know if that matters.
Thank heavens Vista is getting better with all the updates and all. In the beginning many, pulled all their hair out.
Now on mine, I have great wireless internet connection, but all of a sudden I cannot connect to our wireless printer. Now I am totaly bald, no hair left, it is ALL pulled out.
Looks like the wireless card is not getting an IP address from the router. Windows assigns a 169.254.x.x ip addresses when the adapter cannot obtain an ip.
You still need to add the SSID in the wireless connection properties for the router/ap. If you are using Linksys equipment, the default ssid should be "linksys". I think entering the SSID is going your key to success.

The 169 IP address is a random junk IP address that windows sets when it can't find a good one..
Did you check with the Microsoft knowledge base.. Maybe there is a bug..
Also check the network settings to make sure it is set to private not public..
This is backwards from normal. Another dumb Vista upgrade.
Ok the SSID is listed as linksys so I guess I'm ok there. The network was set to public so I switched it to private with no luck connecting. Access is still listed as Local only and the internet does not work. If I use the wizard to diagnose & repair the connection & reset the network adapter it resets the network back to public.
All I can say for sure is that little window that pops up every time you try to do something gets really annoying.
I tried looking through the Microsoft knowledge base but got discouraged when I thought I found an update to fix it, downloaded the update, installed the update, and was then told the update did not apply to what I had on the computer. I'm about to tell her to just plug the friggin thing in when she wants on the internet, but she may need it for school.

So the wireless is seeing the router (linksys)..
Try disconnecting and then reconnect.. I have seen this happen were the default profile gets messed up..
The little window that pops up.. What does it say?
Is it trying to dial a connection?
If it is then Goto internet explorer tools and select never dial a connection..

That should eliminate the pop up..
No. This is the infamous Vista window.
User Account Control
Windows needs your permission to continue
If you started this action, continue.
Continue Cancel
User Account Control helps stop unauthorized changes to your computer.
Edit: I did unplug the router to see if that helped. No luck there, and the other 2 computers that are wirelessly connected aren't having any issues. Virus scan came back clean too.
