'78 F100 Fuel Tank Sending Unit & Breather Valve
I need to replace the fuel tank sending unit on my 1978 F100 with a 19-gal aft/rear tank. It currently shows 'E' when I have a half tank. The gauge seems fine. Dropping the tank is not a pleasant task, so I plan to replace the sending unit, rather than try to repair it. I'll replace the breather valve at the same time. Can anyone recommend a brand/model that they recommend for each? I see several options online, but can't tell if they're all the same quality.
Thanks!

The float is EZ to find as all the repro parts sellers have it. It's the same: 1957/79 Passenger Cars/Trucks, 1961/79 Econoline, 1966/79 Bronco.
D7TZ-9275-D (replaced D3TZ-9275-A) .. Aft Axle Steel Fuel Tank - 19 Gallons (includes float and gasket) // Marked: D3TF-9275-AA or D7TF-9275-DA // Obsolete
.
1973 F100/250 // 1974/79 F100/350 except F350 Regular Cabs on the 140" wheelbase. There's also a plastic aft axle fuel tank for some 1976/79 F250/350.

What/where is this "breather valve" you're referring to?

EEC valve...There are two differences between the tanks. Tanks with EEC have a hole in the top center of the tank. A rubber grommet and check valve are pressed into the hole. A line goes from the check valve along the inside of the passenger side frame rail to the engine compartment where it hooks up to a charcoal canister. Non-EEC tanks don't have this hole. The other difference is the nipple for the breather line that is located right next to the nipple for the filler hose is located 180 degrees opposite.
If you are going from an EEC tankto a non-EEC tankyou must also change the fuelcap to a vented style. The EEC tanks are vented through the EEC system and use a sealed fuelcap. Non-EEC tanks vent through the fuelfiller cap. If you run a non-EEC tankand a sealed cap the minimum is you'll have fuelstarvation problems, at worst a collapsed fueltank.
Is your truck a long bed 4WD? Does it have evaporative emission system?
There are two possibilities with the plastic tank.
79 F150-350 regular cab, 133" WB 4WD, w/ evap. emissions system, 24.8 gallon mid-ship plastic tank
D7TZ-9002-C
Same w/o evaporative emissions system 26.3 gallon plastic tank
D7TZ-9002-D
Fuel sender
76-up F100-350 >s/n C00,000
Use with aft axle steel tank, includes gasket

Thanks NumberDummy and 77&79F250.
I plan to keep my existing tank, unless the inside shows rust or other issues. My truck came with an EEC. The PO removed the EEC canister, plugged the tank check valve, and drilled a hole in his gas cap. When I replace the sending unit, I plan to reinstall the EEC. I have all the parts I need to manage tank vapors (I think), but I'd like to change the check valve rather than trust one that is 45 years old. My question is if one supplier or brand is better than another for the sending unit and check valve. I see them at Dennis Carpenter, Bronco Graveyard, LMC, Amazon, etc. Each looks a little different. Maybe they all work about the same. NOS seems too old for anything with rubber parts like the check valve.

If you plan on keeping this thing, you'd be better off dropping the tanks and doing a full inspection now. It's not hard at all to drop these tank with a floor jack and a piece of plywood. Assuming the tanks aren't rotted, some paint, new lines, senders and straps and you shouldn't ever have to touch it again for decades.

I agree. The tank exterior appears to be in good condition, as are the metal hanger straps and the rubber straps. The filler and vent hose look good, so I should be able to reuse them. I just want to have the parts in-hand (sending unit, breather check valve) so I'm not waiting another week for the parts to arrive.

Your truck has the Evaporative Emission system that is abbreviated Evap/Em // The Evap/Em fuel vapor valve fits into the fuel tank.
