Is the muffler shop dumb?

I got an '01 F-250, and want to put an exhaust on it. They told me that if I put on an aftermarket Y pipe and a high flow cat it will mess up the copmputer. Is this true? I'm gonna get headers, I want a new Y pipe, and 40 series flowmaster.

They are wrong.

I have headers, y-pipe, hi-flow cat and an sftermarket exhaust on my truck and it does nothing yield more power and improved performance.

Just as long as you don't have an O2 sensor after the cat. My 04' only has two O2 sensors one on each header, so it doesn't affect the computer any.

Where can I get an aftermarket Y pipe for my truck? I just about scoured the whole planet searching for one. I don't want to get the banks kit. I just want the Y pipe.

Before you jump in and change the exhaust, do a little research on exhaust tone, volume and drone. Some mufflers sound anywhere from good to OK on the V-10. Some may sound busy and pitched. The sound of a V-10 is very different than the sound of a V-8, and making it louder will only more noticeable. If you are looking for it to increase power, performance or economy (can't believe I just used the word economy on a V-10 forum) it won't be worth the money spent.

There is a guy on ebay that sells the y pipe on ebay, thats the one i picked up, i didnt do the headers because i dont think that it is nessicary after the y pipe install because of how little back pressure ther is with that restriction taken out, but i think that the y is for off road use only.http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-05...spagenameZWDVW

Hears a like to the headers that some of the guys run on there trucks, im tempted to get a set just because of how BA they look. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/00-04...spagenameZWDVW

Oh and like DFK said doing these mods does nothing to you 02 reading both sensors are before the cat and Y, i run no cat after market y and flowmaster 40s with duals strait out the back, and it doesn't hurt anything (except your ears!)

One thing to consider is you may get some flutter with the either of the Ebay or Stan's y-pipes. My dad has the ebay pipe on his truck and he gets a small amount of flutter but its hard to hear over his exhaust.

Stan's also makes a y-pipe and is probably of better quality that the ebay y-pipe but costs a little more. www.stans-headers<WBR>.com/ around $125.00

Pretty much any chambered muffler will sound good on the V10. It won't sound like a V8 but V8s are overrated anyway.

Thanks for all the help guys. I mainly want a better sound and some extra kick. I gave up on exrtra mileage on my truck. Its a losing battle, so I'm eventually puttin on a whipple supercharger. If I'm gonna go, I'm goin all the way!

I went with the y-pipe from ebay, a flowmaster super 40 muffler, and ran dual 2-1/2 pipe out behind the back tires. I wanted to go straight out the back but I couldn't due to the fact I use it to pull different trailers around. The truck has a nice tone as well as giving increased power. I couldn't tell you too much about gas mileage because the gas pedal keeps falling down! Can't help it, I like the sound! Good luck

I checked out the Ebay pipe and I'm proly gonna go with it. Does the stock y pipe have to be cut and the ebay pipe welded into it?

Just read about this Y pipe, and I need to weld it on. Would a 3" high flow cat be a good idea also? I got 145000 on it and pretty much everything is stock except for the oil. Probably stock diff fluid too. I gotta change it BAD. I've never done it on this truck and hae the truck from 80000 miles.

A "high flow" will not help...until you add that Supercharger. If that is definitely in the plan...then go "high flow".

IMHO...I like the aftermarket "direct-fit" replacement from MagnaFlow. I just priced a FORD OEM...at about $750. Ouch!

Good luck...

I would replace the cat with a high flow aftermarket one, only if you don't have to pass the "sniffer" test. The stock cat is huge and has probably plugged up a little over the last 145k miles. FWIW I ditched the stock converter on my 04' at 16k miles, I have a 3" dynatech converter on it now.

Theres an FTE sponsor down in the exhaust forum who is always bragging about how good his converters are better than any other aftermarket cat. You could try one of his and let us know how it is . www.bearriverconverters.com

You may also want to change the O2 sensors. It is recommended to replace the O2 sensors every 70k miles. Your truck has two of them.

After talking to several people including some above me^ (thanks guys) I went with the e-bay stainless Y. Fortunatly, I can't find that darned flutter. Still trying to rake up extra cash for the other mods(cat back sys). I had the truck inspected about a month after the install (they scanned for codes) All was clear!

Yup you gotta cut! First cut is the hardest. When you take it out of the box you'll say to yourself WHAT THE HELL! How's this gonna fit? Lay on your back under the truck awhile and stare at it, make marks with a sharpie on your exisiting pipe. I used a sawsall (make sure the blade tip will clear EVERYTHING around) I cut a small portion out and then slice a little more each time until I was comfortable with the fit. The right side is the tough one, the more you cut it back the better it fits (sorta rolls in place). Good Luck!! PS It helps to clean the underside as best as possible! even emery cloth the the pipe before you start cutting!
