Rear end lube, what kind???

Ok guys as you have figured out I have been doing a rear brake job today. I found that my left rear seal was leaking and I am going to replace it in the morning. So tonight I pulled the rear end cover to let the fliud drain and refill it with new fluid...

So heres the question of the day.

What kind??? Brand, Mobil One, Amsoil, Royal Purple, someone else brand??

And how much do I need???

Thanks Doc.

I used RP and it was right about 3 qts. Make sure to clean the VSS on the top of the pumpkin while you are there. Makes a good fill hole too.

I would give you the exact amount from the manual but it is in my truck. I used less as I still must have had some in the axle tubes. Yours may need more with the seal replacement.

No thank you, for all the help in the past... I am more than happy to return the favor..

I wish I would have taken pictures why I was doing it and then posted it, so other people would have a road map on how to do it, like Guzzlers post...

Rear end holds 7 pints (3.5 qts) of 75W/140 syn. Use your favorite flavor. Don't forget a bottle of friction modifier if you have LS...

Hey, grab the tag number and call a shop... there are different rear ends with different requirments. I had went to change tthe fluid in mine, and found out I had the "Heavy Duty" rear end. Which yeah, was the 75w/140, but what if it wasnt?

Valvoline SynPower gear oil already has special additives to reduce chattering in limited-slip differentials. You might not have to add friction. As the name implies it is synthetic.

I plan on changing mine this weekend. I bought the Royal Purple, do I still need to add the friction modifier? If so how much do I add, I have the tube that they sell at the parts store?

He's got a 250 (SRW, obviously) which should be the Sterling 10.5 inch (which takes the 7 pints of syn 75W-140). Some 350s and 450s got the Dana 80, and the 550s got the Dana 135. It's still good to check, but I'm 99.9% I'm correct on this one...

How much is in the tube? The Ford stuff comes in a 4oz. bottle, and I'd add half first then the rest if it shudders on only 2oz.
