Yes the 4R started the 99 model year. They didn't make a 250 or 350 diesel in 98. They went from 97 to 99. Is yours a Van? If a pickup is it the Superduty body style? If so its considered a 99 model year. Its pretty strange how that all happened!

Yes. The pans fit E4 or 4R. They have the same mounting face.
You just need the right filter for a 4x4 or non 4x4 pan.
Filter has to do will the pan type.

All E4ODs have pans without drain plugs.

All 4R100s have drain plugs.

Ford does not make the E4OD pans anymore and all part #s are replaced with 4R100 part #s. When you go to ford and order a E4OD pan you are getting a SD 4R100 pan. If you 97 older truck has a drain plug then the pan was replaced.

Good info! thanks for sharing that! It will help those who order pans not to think they have the wrong on. Thanks!

I have a 98 f150 4x4. Its not a 99, because it has a 97-98 bumper front and non-pi 5.4.

So, now what do i have here? I bought it used in y2k w/ 32k miles

non-pi 5.4

You have a gasser...no diesels in 98.
You should have either 4r70w, AOD or e4od
Look for Vehicle Certification Label on the drivers door jamb for your transmission code.
It's under the TR in the picture below

U — automatic 4R70W-AOD
E — automatic E4OD

The last year the AOD was produced was 1992, so you can eliminate that one. The AODE went until 1995, so that's out, too. It's either a 4R70W or an E4OD.
