How do I get rid of old gas???

The original tank in my old '52 is full of some very old gas. Who knows of a good way to dispose of it properly? If it matters, I'm in Dayton, Ohio.

Thanks!

Dan

CobraDan,
If your refering to just the gas itself rather than how to get it out of the tank, I think safety kleen would do the job.

We have a haz-mat recycling center, that I took 30 gallons out of my '82 motorhome when I got it to. They took it for free, but I had to leave the 55 gallon drum. Look for a haz-mat center - I'm sure they have one SOMEwhere. You can contact the local wrecking yard, too, and ask them what THEY do with their's, when they bring in a car and need to get rid of the gas.

I live out in the middle of nowhere, I just dump it out on the ground! Usually on some weeds or something NO PROBLEMS!! Then just steam clean your tank and your good to go!

It's a real PIA to get rid of, at least around here. The closest recycling place that would take it was about 30 miles away and they quite a bit to take a few gallons. I finally gave it to a guy who said he would mix small amounts with his waste oil he burned in his shop furnace. I know this might not been the best way to get rid of it but it worked for me. The stuff was more varnish than gas.

Ive used it for weed killer. If your truck has set outside for a while it might be water in it also.

in my county, they have a monthly haz waste collection. they collect "solvents" when i asked them about gas they said they consider it a solvent, so they accept it. wish i had know that about 4 years ago when i tried to let a half gallon evaporate, it took months. good luck, dick r.

I live in the country & I burn it. No matter how old it is it will burn. It is not very volatile like fresh gas. We put a couple of gallons in a metal 5 gallon pail & use a small hand held torch to light it. It smokes pretty black once it gets going good, but it burns up OK. I haven't burned off any hair yet!!

I hate screwing around with gas, it's likes to hang around on the ground and can catch you in a nice fire ball.

I took the gas tank to a radiator shop to be cleaned with the gas inside. Came back clean, empty and coated with epoxy.

I like this idea the best.

I have carboard tubes from work (like a Christmas wrapping paper tube), and I shove them into my brushpile, and pour the gas down the center, and light the brush on fire on the edge. The fire won't really take off, but it certainly gives me enough time to back away. That's country livin' for ya.

Wow, great ideas. I drink water from my backyard well, so I'm not a big fan of dumping it in the ground. I don't know of any hazmat places, but I'll begin searching. The radiator shop idea is definitely the easiest, but I'd hate to think they're dumping it on the ground. I'd better check my pms...

OldgreenF1, I don't think I have PM access here in the FTE site. Feel free to send me an email at cobradant2 (at) yahoo dot com. I wouldn't mind asking you a few local Dayton related questions, too.

Dan,
You shuld have PM capabilities. Look up towards the top of the thread over on the right. There should be a little box that says "Welcome CobraDan" Your last visit____
Private Messages 0 unread, 0 total

To PM somebody click on their name and a drop down menu will show up with several options, "view public profile" "view gallery" "send PM" "send email" etc
Click on "send PM" and away you go.....
