I have a buddies 1999 mountainer and I notice the steering wheel shudders horribly bad from 0 to say 20mph. I put it up on the hoist and turned the wheel left to right, no issue then from lock to lock and the wheels shake like I have never seen and would not stop until I shut the truck off. It looks like the power steering system hit its natural frequency. As anyone else had this problem is it the pump or the rack?
I just got 2000 explorer I hit a pot hole around 45 mph and got "death wobble"google search comes up with lot about it. I will be looking at all suspension components soon.
I've found that moving the wheels side to side while on a jack , such as while doing a brake job or other front end work, can introduce air into the system. To fix this start the engine and crank the steering wheel full left/right several times. This helps purge the air. I had this happen to me and when I hit a bump at highway speed I thought the front end was going to disintegrate.
vicv I just got the vehical a week ago, I will try what you said I did notice that that power steering feels funny at idle it works then doesnt but pump isnt whinning but fluid looks burnt I will replace all fluid and check power steering lines for leaks or loose connections.
Cmos I was told tires where new other that I just finished inspecting front end every thing apears to be solid no play. IM bringing it in tomorrow for alignment check I post what I find out
CMOS I replaced lower ball joints and front hub bearing Still have noticeable shake wobble in wheel not as bad as before, so doing lowers made improvement. I Picked up uppers ball joints/ control arms today will be doing them also. The First time I checked every thing I did it by hand jacking vehicle up and grabbed wheel every thing semed ok that way. So the 2nd time I used good size bar and pried up on bottom of wheel then I found the play in bottom ones. Will keep informed on progress.
