1979 F350 4X4 with 33,000 original miles
Hello all;
I'm new to the wesite and forums and am very happy to have found such a resource. My Ford truck is a 1979 F350 4X4 with 33,000 original miles. The truck was gifted to me by my father, who purchased the truck new. My father decided, after using the the truck as a daily driver for about a year, that a Toyota made more sense as a daily driver. So the F350 went under covered storage and only got brought out when Dad needed a real truck.
The truck has mostly sat for the past 20 years. I know that it had 27,000 miles on it in 1987. When my Dad gave it to me 20 years later, in 2007, it had only 4000 more miles on it. So I had to do a lot of minor repairs on the truck just to get it home. Foutunaetly, Dad had the truck repainted about a year before he gave it to me, so the body/paint are in excellent condition.
Now I know why Dad bought the Toyota, though. The F350 gets about 10 MPG when trailering my boat/motorcycle trailers; it gets about 12-13 MPG without the load. With dual 30 gallon fuel tanks, that translates to about $180.00 or more to refuel an empty truck.
MPG is my biggest concern with the truck right now. I understand that Ford made a 4-speed manual overdrive trnasmission that might fit in the truck - the T170F (Code-RUG) transmission. Other options include NV 4500 or Gear Vendors conversions. Both options appear pretty pricy, though. Oh, well - I'll figure something out!
