I was wondering what a set of headers would do proformace wise to my Ford 460. Its a 1994 f-250 extended cab, long box, 4wd, with an automatic trans. Also, to those who own a 460, what other small things really helped to bring the old beast to life. I've put on a K+N cold air intake and a throttle body spacer and was looking into different ignition coils etc. I'm currently running strait pipes and would like to know what a set of super 40 flowmaster dual pipes would sound like on it.
I don't know, I've been risking that ticket for about a year and a half now. I ran the pipes strait back and I went form 9mpg to 11, and a noticable power gain.
The headers should help your flow a bit to give you some more torque.....I bet that spacer was a waste of money though.....might look into changing your gearing.....Another thing with the headers....you might have an issue with the flanges clearing your transmission properly.
The spacer was on the pickup when I bought it, I know what you mean though, I bought one for my half ton and didn't notice anything. And I've thought about maybe a set of 373's for the rear end, it has all the power it needs to push the 355's but I test drove a stock 460 with 411's and it would take off like no other.
Yea the 3.55's push my truck around decently and real good in the high end...so I'm kinda hesitant to swap em out for 4.11's myself.....but she seems to be getting to be more of a 1/4 mile toy than anything...heh...we'll see.Gears always help...but remember you gotta do the fronts as well as the rears.Luck
Well, the 355's are a little over kill on mine, in my opinnion. If I put it to the floor it shifts from 2nd to 3rd at about 72MPH and from 3rd to 4th after the needle is burried. So I don't know. But at 75MPH in overdrive it's pulling just under 2,500 RPMS
Check out and or search the 385 series sub forum. There are lots of guys on there who at one time or another have asked the same question your asking.
Headers, from what I have read from those who have them, help a great deal on a 460 especially. The Broncograveyard (sponsor of this board) has some that are made by L&L, they are reasonably priced, advertise great dyno proven gains, and carry a lifetime warranty.
I vote to stay away from the flowmasters, if you get mufflers, get a free flowing Dynomax Ultraflow or Magnaflow muffler/s. Good sound and great flow. The Flowmaster's should be called sound masters.
Insulate your intake tract and make some sort of box to isolate the air filter from the hot engine compartment, allowing it to only pull air from an outside source.
Cut of the little "air horns" in the intake tubes.
Hope this helps, please remember to post up your results if you make some changes.
There is nothing wrong with Flowmasters. I know eveyone has there pref, but I think that the flowmaster sound is the best. I have Magnaflows on my Mustang, its is pritty quiet. With long tubes, off road x pipe, and the magnaflow catback. Flowmasters fow good and always sound good. Dynomax mufflers from what I have seen fall apart.
i was planing on doin headers, but i read that they do more for high rpm horsepower and that torue gains will come from changing your cat and everything behind it
