2002 Ford 150 Super Screw
I have been told that the best chance to clear this code and problem is to replace the EGR Valve. My question is can I do it myself. I know fairly know my way under the hood. And I have located the EGR Valve. It only looks like a couple screws and a vacuum hose to remove the valve. Is it that simple? Or is there more under there that I am not seeing. Don't want to get under there and take something off then later find myself way over my head under the hood. I have been taken to the cleaners with dealership pricing in the past and with the mileage and the age of that truck I'd rather take some short cuts.
Also please concur that this might be the problem to the PO401 Code.
Replacing the EGR valve will probably not help you out much. Most of the time the 0401 code is caused by: a) Clogged EGR passages in the intake or, b) a faulty DPFE sensor. Clogged EGR passages are basically a free fix, it just takes about an hour of your time. I don't know which engine you're running, but if you search "P0401" on this site you'll find what you need. You could go high dollar and spend the 8 bucks for new gaskets, but if you're careful you won't need to.
If that doesn't make the code go away you're going to want to think about replacing the DPFE sensor. If you need to go this route, do yourself a favor and use a genuine Ford replacement part. The Pep Boys/ O'Reilly/ NAPA replacement DPFE sensors just aren't reliable. Don't ask me how I know, I just do. Good luck!
ill vouch for not buying aftermarket sensors. I bought a napa dpfe sensor and the ses light came back on, then i bought a ford dpfe sensor and the ses light never came back.
Correcto!!!! The EGR passages was clogged. Reset, but still got a light back after 20 miles. So I replaced the DPFE sensor. Reset and have driven over 200 miles with no Service Engine Soon light. Great advice! Looks like the DPFE was bad, but clogged EGR passages had to be a problem as well.
