Is Fun or Enjoyment Banned In Massachusetts?

On this cool February day I just spend the better part of 4 hours ripping my dads exhaust system off his truck. He has a Gibson side swept catback on it. He had it for a few years. Today he went to the dealer for a sticker and they failed him for it. He asked them I had it the past three times and I got a sticker? The dealer said the State has issued a mandate to inforce the "no aftermarket exhaust" rule. So we had to spent the day trying to get a old salty, rusted shut, rotted bolt, and no way in hell to get the rubber hangars apart exhaust system off so he can get a sticker.

My dad asked "what if it is not loud?". Zero aftermarket exhaust is leagal. Loud or not.

So I got a problem. I have the full banks powerpack with no OEM stuff left in the barn. My dad still kept his old one. So if I get guff about it....I am staring at about a $3,000 bill to buy all the stuff again.

Way to go Masschusetts.

For you to read.

4.04 Procedures for Inspection of Non-Commercial Motor Vehicles (continued)
(5) Muffler and Exhaust System. Accelerate motor to test for prevention of unnecessary noise and emission of any unreasonable amount of smoke. The exhaust system, exhaust manifold(s), exhaust pipe(s), muffler(s), and tailpipe(s), if designed to be so equipped, shall be tight and free of leaks. System components shall be securely fastened with fasteners in place and undamaged. All motor vehicle exhaust systems shall discharge the exhaust beyond operator, passenger, and/or trunk compartment. Unnecessary noise is herein defined as any noise which is louder than that emitted by the vehicle when equipped with the original manufacturer's equipment. A gas or diesel vehicle will be rejected if, at normal operating temperature, at any constant speed over 15 MPH, (approximately 1,000 to 1,200 RPM's) visible black or blue exhaust emissions are evident

We have run into the same issues here at the dealership in regards this issue. The registry is clamping down on inspection stations in regards to things like exhaust noise and lifts. We have actually had registry inspectors park across the street from our inspection station and stop cars as they were leaving to reinspect our work.

They tell us that anything louder than stock is illegal!!!

Yup........My V10 not not loud at all. I am worried about my turn for a sticker.

I canlt imagine that this is a issue? Harley's in the summer are 100 times louder. Why all of a sudden the crackdown?

I guess the "50 state legal" will need to be changed to 49. Here in Florida no inspections you should see some of the cars on the road. But kinda nice not worrying about inspections.

When my dad recieved a rejected sticker because of his exhaust, they guy also told him his tail light covers have to removed and his rear license plate bracket had to go. All would cause him to fail. The bracket is funny. The reason is it blocked "massachusetts". The top 1/16" of the 'M" in massachusetts is blocked. Absolute joke. I drive through the ghetto every day to and from work. Black windows, huge fart can muflers, covered tail lights, plus other junk. A hard working guy with a nice sounding engine gets failed.

STUPID STUPID STUPID

Heck tuners are illegal in Massachusetts.

Tell me about it. I have not seen or heard a quality aftermarket cat back be offensive to anyone.

Whay get a hair across thier rearend now?

Massachusetts at its finest.

I work in Agawam. I really am thinking about moving to Connecticut in the future. All you get is a emission check every two years.

Planning on it. There is some variables still to work out to see if I can go. I live in Granby and work in Agawam. I drive past the HOF everyday.

I've always had a Flowmaster 40 on every truck I've owned (except the V10) and have never run into a problem. My Dakota has FM 40 and is very loud. I'm worried about getting it inspected in May.
