'99 Expy with vibration

I recently bought a '99 Expedtion XLT,138,000 miles from a used car dealer in my area. (Fortunately I have a 30 day 1,000 mile warrantee). AFTER I got it home I noticed the front driveshaft was missing. The dealer installed a used one, and said the 4wd/awd was working okay. Near the end of my 45 min. drive home I noticed a strong vibration, possible with some slipping, when accellerating briskly, even in my residential neighborhood. Of course I will be bringing it back to the dealer.
I am sure it is impossible to dx from this description but I do have a few questions. Does the front driveshaft still turn when it is running in rwd? If so, is it the front differential that is turning it as the front wheels turn, and the flange on the transfer case is spinning freely in the transfer case, or is it the transfer case sending power to it? If so, then there would have to be some auto-locking hubs on the front axles when in 4wd. I guess what I am asking is how does this system work?
Thanks

The front drive shaft turns all of the time and the transfer case is where the shifting in and out of 4wd occurs.

I tatally agree with berry1234, I'd get my money back and find a truck elsewhere. I would not trust a dealer that would intentionally try to pass of a truck by removing a driveshaft! Good job catching it before it was too late!

Wink

I actually think they didn't know it was missing! They get these at auction and put them right on the lot. They wrote me a limited warrantee (which they weren't required to do under the NYS lemon law for used vehicles as it has over 100,00 miles). The 4wd does work now, although I am not sure if the auto-4wd will kick in when slippage occurs. As far as getting them to buy it back - that might be a tough one. I would probably have to sue them.

See if the dealer is willing to work with you on this. I would say there is a problem some where as why else would the drive shaft be missing. But it could also be the drive shaft is out of balance, or even a seesed? up u joint.
But don't let up untill it is fixed. These things can cost a few bucks.

I agree, there is a reason the driveshaft was removed, be it at the dealer or before they got it. If they are confident enough to give the truck a warranty, they should stand by it. Buying a 4X4 with the idea that it is complete is not tooo much to ask.

I've heard of some people removing the front shaft because they never used the four wheel drive and thought that they could save gas by doing so. Why have a 4x4 if you're not going to use it?

Removing the front driveshaft doesn't improve mileage on this vehicle, does it?
I have also heard people removing it to improve mileage, but would replace it in the winter.

It may but I would never consider doing it. I don't use the 4 wheel much but it's nice to know it's available when I encounter snow, monsoon rain, flooded streets, or short off-road excursions to avoid photo radar.
