definitive test of penetrating oils
got this from another forum, I am attempting to get the magazine and verify.
"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!
Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
None ................. 516 pounds .
WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
<st1:city w:st="on"><st1>Kano</st1> </st1:city>Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10
The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

I heard how great PB Blaster is so I bough it and tried it but it never seem to help at all.
So I then started using WD-40 on one side of the trucks and PB Blaster on the other.
The WD-40 treated ones came loose and PB Blaster ones broke or had to put WD-40 on them to get them off.
I have gave up on PB Blaster will not buy it any more but I did give it all kinds of chances to work.

It depends on the type of rust and the conditions and situations and the age of the corrosion.
I have found that using Blaster, then heat when possible, then Blaster again to break it loose (Blaster contains an acid which disolves rust), then WD, Free-All, or similar smooth lubricant to help it slip and not bind on rusty residue as you finish removing it works best for me.

Well I've never tried the atf thing...which I will try.
Here's another little known secret.
Candle wax.
I only recently read this on an offroading site.
It said to heat the bolt quickly and apply wax to the threads...which gets sucked into the bolt. Reheat and reapply wax a few times(which only takes a couple of minutes).
It apparently cleans the threads as well as lubricating them.
I just tried to find that thread but couldn't find that one, though google did find other pages on the subject. It has also been discussed on this site before.
Anyway....thought I would put this up. I haven't tried this yet since it's still winter here and not really doing anything to the truck till spring. I will try it as soon as get the chance.
