I just went down this path a couple weeks ago. Turned out I had a bad plug wire, and a dirty throttle bottle. I took the throttle body off the manifold, and the idle controller off the throttle body and cleaned them out real well with throttle body cleaner (carb cleaner). The the clean throttle body, and good plug wires helped a lot. Also check that your EGR valve/position sensor are working properly. This can be done via OBD diagnostic codes.
