I am looking to put an oil cooler from a '86 van onto my '74 460. It appears that the van motor had a hollow bolt with holes drilled into to for oil passage, that held the oil adapter onto the motor. I have a '71 block similar to the one in they truck I want to put the cooler into, and in place of the hole for the hollow bolt, is a hollow stud. Is there a way to get this thing off so I can do a no-brainer install??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-Dec-01 AT 10:10 AM (EST)]What would be ideal is the oil cooler Ford put on the State Trooper cars in the early 70's. The filter adapter also had fittings for an temp controller water cooled oil cooler. I have one but years ago I removed the guts for the temp control.
If the adapter in the block doesn't have the hex on it, get you a nut that fits the adapter and saw it in half. Jam the two halves together to unscrew the adapter out of the block. I think that is what you are trying to do, remove the original oil filter adapter?
I would have thought that the hollow stud would have a hex portion so that it could be removed. If that is not the case, then I don't know how you would go about removing it.
Get a thin nut, you might have to split one, and screw it onto the hollow bolt. screw both into the adapter and then tighten the nut firmly and then try to loosen the adapter by turning both the nut and the hollow bolt with most of the pressure on the wrench on the bolt.
If that doesn't work, leave the bolt in the adapter and try using some vice gipr in the adapter and see if it will budge.
Tried the vice grip technique, left me with stripped threads. I didn't look hard enough on the block to see if it had the hex bolt on it, but assuming it doesn't, in theroy will this thing come out??? I dont like the idea of getting near the good motor with a hot wrench, so IF, and when I get around to installing this thing, I will try to get a nut that fits and do as suggested. BTW, anybody know what size that thing is??
A water cooled oil cooler??? that sounds pretty trick! Too bad that finding something like that is unlikely I will settle (for now) for an air cooled setup to keep the motor happier..
My truck has a water cooled oil cooler from the factory. Of course it's not cold water but engine coolant. I believe that it is still probably much more effective than an air cooled unit. If you want one they came one late model pickups with oil coolers. You could probably get one new from Ford or you could get one from a junk yard. I'd probably go with new though - I'd hate to ruin an engine by getting coolant in the oil because my oil cooler failed.
