97 460 efi engine swap into 92 F-350 w /460

First of all,i would like to wish everyone HAPPY HOLIDAYS and a joyous season.I have a question,I'm getting ready to do an engine swap.I recently aquired a 97 F-350 roll-over truck with very low mileage.I want to put that 460 efi engine in my 92 F-350,both trucks are non California emissions or should i say 49 state specs.I know the engine is a bolt in,but my main concern is : is the 92 ecm and harness compatible with the 97 engine, not to mention the injectors also.If not ,i will then also swap the ecm and harness as well (a job that i would like to avoid)Any highlights and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS :P

The 97 motor is the best choice in my opinion, its the only year without the smog bumps in the exaust ports, at least mine didnt have em even befor i ported em. as long as you use all and i emphisise all of your of your 1992 electronics, it will all plug in and run injectors and all are compatible. you might encounter a mild variation in compression ratio's since the 1992 motor would have a smaller compbustion chamber, but it is such a small difference the Speed density should be able to compensate. Go for it, also you might if your truck is the E40D use the 97 E40D it uses the stronger diesel guts vs the older style. Since youll have the motor out have you considered any other modifications?

Good luck and dont worry you wont have any compatibility problems with the motor and your electronics.

Thanks for the reply,Dusty.Youre right, the 92 has E7 heads and the 97 has F3 casting numbers. My future possible mods are,MAF,efi cam, maybe Vortec Supercharger,MSD.Was going to do this to my other 97 F-350XLT ,but decided to leave it alone.(still under warranty) Did you see a noticable improvement after the MAF conversion, and where can i get one.I did a few homemade tricks which made a noticable power improvement,1)cut off the restrictor in the intake hose,2)turn the thermostat into a restrictor washer,3)hollowed the kitty cat,4)put a toggle switch to intercept the cluth pedal switch EEC-4 reference circuit(enables you to shift hard without the EEC retarding the ignition timing,so it seems),5)also put a toggle switch on the speedo wire to be able to do a good top end charge without the EEC cutting in,(i think)6)lose the restrictive muffler in favor of a 3" muffler w a Powerstroke tail pipe.THANKS

Check this string out it covers the 460 MAF conversion
https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/80_96/4544.html#23

Interactive was offering a kit but nobody knows where they disappeared to, thats where i got mine, well you have a few choices, you can open up a motor sport catalog and order up a early Speed density 302 overlay harness and MAF conversion kit since the early speed density 302's had the same firing order, or you could order the 96- 1/2ton main wiring harness completely rewire your engine compartment to the MAF 5.0 or 5.8 harness, then trace your injector wires and pull the incorrectly timed wires and switch them to give you the correct firing order. The MAF did give me some improvement, but more than anything it improved the ability of my system to take full advantage of my upgrades.

Removing the Cat was one of my first mods. Have you bumped up your cam timing with the 70 timing chain? also have you turned your ignition timing up? you do need to becareful with your thermostat, too low will trigger the computer to engage the run rich code, resulting in an endless running of extra fuel in an attempt by the EEC to compensate and warm it up, i made that mistake once. The E7TE heads are an 87 casting with 92 cc chambers, the F3TE heads i believe are 97 cc's if you go mass air a set of E7's ported and polished with the CJ valves like i did will really rip and tear especially if you put higher compression pistons in. Also with the MAF you can get a little more radical with your cam choices. Are you still running the sir box or have you gone full on K&N filter charger? Also have you looked into headers? that was the largest power increase of all of my mods. just depends on how in depth you want to get with it.

Good Luck
Dusty
